The story starts with John McLeod as he goes to look for coal so his family does not freeze. John, a father of four is as caring as any dad is, but what sets him apart is his personal traits. John is kind, loving, easy to talk to and understanding. I knew he was sympathetic and thoughtful when he failed to go collect his debts from friends because he understood what situation his friends were in. His conversation with the security guard as he went to pick the coal shows that John is respectful and knows what to say when he needs help. The watchman was at first uptight with John but changed his mind later after John used his charming personality. Davie too had nice words to say about John. Agnes McLeod was married to John McLeod. The couple had four kids, Ninian, Andrew, Paul, and Margaret. The family had faced their ups and downs but still lived cordially.
I appreciate how the author created the scenes that involved the children, everything about them was breathtaking. The McLeod family was great until the children started developing some strange characters. The mood in the book suddenly changed from that of a happy family to one which had internal issues. Ninian and Paul had become my two favorite characters at the start of the book. It was such a pity when the brothers began struggling with drug problems and mental issues. Though the mood in the book shifted, I appreciate the author’s efforts to incorporate the themes that showed personal struggles, detachment from family, substance abuse, carelessness and the challenges the siblings went through.
Through Paul and Ninian, we see how friends and family get affected when those around them are facing their demons. Tom McKay knows how to move the reader’s emotions through every scene. Some parts of the book evoked happy feeling and others made the reader sad. ‘Consciousness and Perception: A Part-Fictionalised Reflection On Humanity’s Struggle To Know Reality’ is engaging, brilliant and excellently written. Some words have a twist, giving the reader the impression of having a Scottish accent. The twisted words made reading this book a unique experience. You will love some characters like Father Reilly, Davie, Agnes McLeod, Eddie, Rab and John McLeod for their distinct traits.
Other than the amazing plot, Tom McKay’s book passes as a brilliant read because the reader is forced to think and reflect on some human struggles through the main characters. There is a take after every scene. Tom McKay’s writing style is excellent and superb for readers of all ages to follow. The book has a few turns in the midst of the drama, making it difficult for the reader to predict future events. This is one of the major reasons that made this book juicy. I recommend ‘Consciousness and Perception: A Part-Fictionalised Reflection On Humanity’s Struggle To Know Reality’ to literature enthusiasts who enjoy reading fiction books that are fused with a little reality. I give the book a rating of 4/5.
