The data set I have chosen to work on is ‘Bears’. As explained by Brockwell and Davis (2013), the explanation of relationships between elements requires the comparison of at least two variables. The two variables I have chosen from the Bears Data Set are body length (inches) and weight.
After calculating the r value in excel using the =CORREL function, I got r =0.8644. This indicates that the relationship between length and weight in bears is very strong as enumerated by Cohen, West, and Aiken (2014).
The diagram below shows the scatter plot for the two variables (length and weight).
With the equation of the trend line given as Y=9.839x-393.84, it is possible to estimate the value of weight (y) as described by Shumway and Stoffer (2011).
Take a length of 70 inches, for instance, to estimate weight using this length, consider;
Y=9.839x-393.84
Y=9.839(70)-393.84
Y=688.73-393.84
Y=294.89 pounds
