The different stages of attachment in an infant from the age of 0 to 1 year are important stages of development and are being discussed here. The first stage is known as pre attachment from birth to 6 weeks and in this ‘pre attachment stage’ – there is no particular attachment of the infant with any specific caregiver. The next stage is indiscriminate that lasts from 6 weeks to about 7 months and in this stage, the concerned infant starts to show a certain amount preference to primary and secondary caregivers. After 7 months – there starts the discriminate stage in attachment where the infant finally shows a very strong liking and attachment to one particular caregiver. In 10 plus months – the infant shows more attachments with other caregivers (Dunkel & Harbke, 2017).

The strategies that the caregivers can take up to help the children recognize and regulate their emotions are – ‘the goal of activities’ – here in this activity, the child is made to identify emotions and name the same human emotions. Another strategy is reading out stories to the child and on hearing and knowing about the characters – the child will be able to relate to their emotions and feelings and eventually manage their own emotions. Playing a game called ‘Emotional Charades’ in which a child conveys an emotion through face – is another vital strategy to help children recognize and regulate their emotions (Green, Kalvaitin & Worster, 2016).

According the psychosocial theory, there is autonomy versus shame and doubt and in toddlerhood stage – it is very important for the caregivers to develop autonomy in the child, instead of shame and doubt. Addressing the esteem, dignity needs of the child is a critical step that has to be taken by the caregivers and giving the personal space to the children while they undress and during toileting activities – is very pivotal in developing autonomy during toddlerhood stage. Not hurrying the child during toileting activities is important for autonomy development.
