David Ives

Born on July 11^th 1950, David Ives is an accomplished screenwriter, novelist and playwright. Best known for his one act plays, an art he has definitely perfected, David Ives has earned himself a huge tittle in the field (“David Ives – The New York Times,” n.d.). The inclusion of his plays in anthologies and the awards he has worn himself as a playwright is undoubtedly a proof of the above fact (“Playwright David Ives Finds His Timing Perfectly”). All In The Timing won the Outer Critics Circle Playwriting Award, The Liar won the Charles MacArthur Award while A Flea in Her Ear (a play he translated) won a Joseph Jefferson Award. For seven times now, he has been included in the Best Short Plays series. Among his novels are Voss, scrib and Monsieur Eek (“David Ives | Playscripts, Inc”).

It is postulated that Ives’ early life had a great part in influencing his career. He grew up in a neighborhood packed with a variety of ethnicities and cultures. At the age of 9, Ive wrote his first play. In addition to that, his high school was an eye opener for him in the world of theatre. At the end of the senior year in his former high school, students were allowed to take a role in a school show where teachers would be mocked.  Later, Ives joined Northwestern University where he majored in English and graduated in 1971 with a degree in Arts.

In New York, Ive started the long stretch towards what he is now with the play Canvas which was staged at the Circle Repertory Company in the year 1972. Currently, together with his wife Martha a linoprint artist and a book illustrator, Ive resides in in New York City.
