Waste management presents a challenge to any organization. The immediate problem
arises when considering the best possible means to use to get rid of waste from a property. The
three most common and cost effective ways of getting rid of refuse from a property are
compaction, recycling, and reuse. Each of these methods has benefits as well as drawbacks
which play a part in deciding the method to use. Through looking at each, in turn, we can
identify the preferred alternative for dealing with refuse in an organization.

Different methods of managing waste are present and in common use today. Compactors
are common in most modern kitchens. They are especially useful for reducing the volume of
waste that is meant to be sent to landfills. Another common way of managing waste is recycling.
Recycling presents a way of turning products back into their raw state. Recycling is useful
especially since not all items that are thrown away are intended to be. In effect, recycling helps
in the recovery of unintended throwaways. Glass, for example, is being used as a replacement for
sand that has been washed away by tidal waves. The glass is ground into a fine state so that it

will not harm anyone. A salient point about recycling is that hotel and restaurants claim they
want to be compensated for the recycling of products. The point is moot since recycling saves
the hotel costs of hauling the waste to the waste management facilities.
One question that emerges when talking about recycling is how to go about it. Recycling
requires that one identifies a party that is passionate about the cause. Next, the waste stream is
analyzed to determine what kind of products can be recycled. After that, recyclers and points of
collection for recycled goods in the area are identified, and the program is implemented. It is
important to put in place measures to ensure that the program is monitored to ensure it meets its
objectives. Also worth noting is that the recycling program should be in place before the property
opens. For all its shortcomings, recycling is passed over when talking about a waste management
strategy for reuse. Reuse takes a material or good in its original form and reuses them over and
over for the entire duration of the product life. Materials slated for reuse are separated by type,
thus adding to the efficiency of the operation.
