Mutual exclusive events occur when either two or more events are able to happen at the same time, without any influence on the others (Creswell, 2013). Mutual exclusion is a common phenomenon is science as it dismisses certain factors from being asymptotic to others. For instance, in medicine, it may be argued that mental disorders and cardiac ailments are mutually exclusive. They have no relationship, yet they happen on the same host and can be categorized as clinical conditions. Mutual exclusive events also happen in contemporary life. For instance, it is possible to talk while walking. The two psychomotor functions are cognitive. Regardless, it is not necessary for one to stop one of the activities in place of the other. Mutual exclusion can also be considered to be the antonym to mutual inclusion, where one event happens due to another or with regard to another. One such example is the presence of mud after one sprinkles water or in a rainy spell.

Collectively Exhaustive Events

Collectively exhaustive events exist when at least one of the events must occur in every circumstance or set of probabilities (Punch, 2013). For instance, the common end of day leads to night time. A day will have a period of daytime and a night as well. However, the best illustration for collectively exhaustive events is the six-faced dice. This dice will be rolled with six possibilities in mind; the numbers one to six. In any roll of the dice, there has to be a number; either 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 that lands on the upper side. In the same way, a coin toss will lead to two possible outcomes; heads or tails. Collectively exhaustive events are used mostly in gambling as they present sure outcomes from a set of possibilities.
