Document Design

The purpose and function of a document must be taken into consideration when making
its design. It includes the use of the content and its availability mode whether electronically or in
print mode. The type of document is influenced by the features, resources, and visual style. The
design also incorporates the layout of the document. A layout grid is essential in the design of a
document since it helps to outline the flow of the content.
The menu from a local restaurant on slide sixteen of the document design power point
has such a poor design. For instance, the whole document is written in uppercase, and it’s not
clearly punctuated thus resulting in difficulty to the reader. The font size and the margins used in
the paper do not depict a good design. It is tough for a reader to differentiate the headings and
content. There are no price indications on the dishes on the menu. The lack of prices on a menu
fails to meet the purpose and function of the menu.
In a bid to improve the design of this menu, I would ensure that the document meets its
purpose and easy for customers to read. I would differentiate the font size of the content from
that of headings. For instance, the words luncheon and dinner would be in bold and have a larger
font size for the items under the entry. I would also split the menu into various subsections that
categorize similar foods as opposed to having an open list. For example, the items available for
breakfast would be clearly outlined like the meals on luncheon and dinner. To ensure the ease of

reading the document, the headings would be in uppercase and their content in lowercase. I
would also settle for a landscape layout as opposed to portrait.
