Original question
As a new general manager of the Club, clearly identify how you plan to handle the situation described below, in light of your answers to steps 1 – 4.Include cited sources (with page/paragraph numbers) from the assigned readings to support your final analysis and decision. Even though you are functioning as the general manager, responses to learning activities must be in THIRD PERSON, which means do not use “I, me, my” in your responses. Use headers to organize your response.
Step 1 FIRST IMPRESSION:  After reading the scenario, is your first impression to fire Jessica or put her on probation? Would you reprimand the Head Chef?
Step 2 PERSONALITY FACTORS: How does your personality affect how you would relate to Jessica in the workplace?  Formulate your response using the following:
· Take the Jung Typology Test at http://www.humanmetrics.com/
· Identify your four letter personality under the test results and what it means in the workplace using the definitions in the typology.
· Identify Jessica’s four letter personality with clues from the case.
· Compare your personality and Jessica’s and how they complement or conflict in the workplace.
· How would this information influence your decision as to how to handle the situation?
Step 3 BIASES IN DECISION MAKING: Are there biases present in your reactions? Formulate your response by considering the following questions, ideas, and thoughts.
· What about this decision makes you feel outside your comfort zone and why? For instance, do you like decisive actions or strong personalities or do you want to please everyone? Can you handle the conflict with the Board members (who hired you) should you not give them the response they suggest?
· What is your emotional reaction to Jessica’s reply to your inquiry?
· Does your gender influence your initial reaction to Jessica’s response to your recitation of the Board member’s comments? Be honest, not politically correct!
· Based on the readings to date and the answers to the questions above, do you see any bias in your desire to handle this case? For instance, are you influenced by you new position status?
Step 4 CONCLUSIONS:
· Reflect on how you responded in Step 1
· Reflect on how you responded to Steps 2 and 3
· Explain, describe, and support how your initial reaction is different from the final way you would handle the situation at the club.

Jessica Cuthbert was made Director of Cuisine at the historic all male Garrick Gentleman’s Club (Literary club) in London (https://www.garrickclub.co.uk/about/). Her appointment to the position came only six months ago and after 20 years with the club in other positions.  The membership admired her management skills and her family heritage as there had been a Cuthbert at Garrick’s since 1831 when the club was founded.  She worked hard in her new post.  Cuthbert was known for being tough but fair in her approach to her staff.
Jessica was civil to everyone, but was considered a loner by her fellow directors and remote in her dealings with others. She often judged her co-workers and found little tolerance for their sometimes less than logical thinking. Jessica was shy and over the years she had trained herself to be more extroverted. However, this struggle was always with her. She does not get strength from being around people, but from being home alone. As the only female director, Jessica was fearful that she would not be treated with respect. Hitherto, Jessica was always under the supervision of men –something the culture of the club favored.  In her new position Cuthbert became overly attentive to her staff and micromanaged everyone from the lowest dishwasher to her Head Chef.  She did this because she felt that it was important to imitate a man’s reactions to the new position. The staff were unhappy with the change in her treatment of them and were demoralized. They had taken to calling her “iron drawers” behind her back.
Yesterday two of the club’s oldest, and controlling, board members of the club came to report her poor behavior to you, the Executive Director of the club.  The members reported that she recently was overheard by several Club members arguing in loud voices with the Head Chef, who threatened to quit.  The Board members said, “We cannot have her having a female temper tantrum. That cannot happen anymore.” Further, “The Chef is too good to have him leave. This is what you get for hiring a woman.” They want to see action. One of the senior board members then says “She isn’t up to the job and we think she should be put on probation or fire, but we know you will do what is best for the club.”
You call Jessica into your office and apprise her of the situation. She says very little but appears to be very shaken by the instructions uttered by the Board members. Jessica explains, “The Head Chef is much older than I am and he thinks that because I am young and a woman, he can run right over me and do what he likes. He just wants to spend money on food without understanding the costs he is generating. The Board members sure would not like it when their food costs double.” When you ask Jessica about her reaction to the Board members’ concerns, she draws herself up to full height and replies with defiance,” I realize that I am a woman in an all men’s club and that is a problem with many of the members. I have worked for this club for over twenty years and have always tried to act respectfully to the members and the staff. I resent being told that my behavior was due to a female temper tantrum.”

Gregory Johnson    Student Answer/Post: Step 1
The general manager would refuse to fire Jessica because of her achievements on the position of the head chef. The general manager would set her on a probation period to establish the compromise between her and her colleagues. Jessica is a too valuable specialists to fire. She only needs to change her politics towards her subordinates to let them work in harmony.
Step 2
The general manager can understand Jessica because of the correlation of theirJungian types. For example, according to Jung’s typology, the manager am an ENTJ. Manager’s basic function is extraverted thinking as well the secondary one is introverted intuition. Manager relies on the abstract vision of the situations, prioritizes ideas and general facts over details, and judges by thinking rationally (Humanmetrics Editors, 7). Jessica is similar to the general manager as long as she is INTJ. Her primary cognitive function is introverted intuition which is supported by extraverted thinking. She is introverted due to her shyness. She also tends to rationalize the actions of her colleagues and loses temper to that irrationality due to her Thinking type (Humanmetrics Editors, 7). Her intuition is stronger than sensing as long as she hardly feels the barrier of others’ freedom, though she still manages to sense others’ behavior traits and repeat them when needed. While other colleagues probably belong to the Feeling types due to their focus on the emotional aspect of work, it is easier for the general manager to understand Jessica because of the same reaction to the situation. Being concerned in irrationality of others, the general manager would try to lobby Jessica’s figure as of the authoritative partner. However, the general manager would tell Jessica to work with her character and to try being tolerant to others’ moral state.
Step 3
Asking Jessica to go on probation would be difficult for the general manager because of the ability to see the situation from her point of view. On the other hand, the general manager understands that it is Jessica’s fault. She has lost the control over her attempt to rule the way others complete their job. Jessica needs time to re-estimate her behavior. The genral manager could be sorry for sending such an efficient worker on the probation period. As long as ENTJ is a Thinking type either, it would not be emotionally draining for the general manager to speak the truth. Both sides of the conflict, including Jessica and other colleagues, require fair responses to their inability to cooperate well inside their team. The general manager can consider Jessica’s claim about gender discrimination due to the relatable world-view. The general manager can depend on the extreverted thinking this situation due to the desire to remain strict and honest at the same time.
Step 4
As a Thinking type, the general manager does not allow the emotions to take the control over the decision-making processes. Sending Jessica to the probation period is the most adequete and balanced idea, considering the psychological obstacles of the conflict. It is impossible to let Jessica work with the same attitude towards others which she has to change. The general manager could pay attention to Jessica’s opinion about gender discrimination in their office. While ENTJ does not fight for the emotional stability, it is essential for this type to protect the equal conditions of the organization at work.

· Latisha Jordan Student Answer/Post: Step 1 FIRST IMPRESSION:  After reading the scenario, is your first impression to fire Jessica or put her on probation? Would you reprimand the Head Chef?
First impression would be to place Jessica on probation and possibly reprimand the Head Chef.
· Step 2 PERSONALITY FACTORS: How does your personality affect how you would relate to Jessica in the workplace?  Formulate your response using the following:
After taking the Jung Typology Test, the result was ISFJ (Introvert, Sensing, Feeling and Judging). The definition of the ISFJ in the workplace is that they are methodical and accurate workers, often with very good memories and unexpected analytic abilities. They also tend to do good with people in small groups or one-on-one situations because of their patient and genuinely sympathetic approach to dealing with others. They are pleasant and reliable co workers and exemplary employees but tend to be very uncomfortable in supervisory roles. They are capable of forming strong loyalties, personal rather than institutional. Work ethics is very high on their priority list. Jessica is believed to be ISTJ (Introvert, Sensing, Thinker and Judging). She is considered an introvert because the case indicated that she doesn’t get her strength from being around people, but from being home alone. The struggle was always with her even though she is training herself to be more of an extrovert. Sensing because she felt that she would not be treated with respect because she was a woman. Thinking because she was known for being tough but fair in her approach to her staff. Judging because she became overly attentive to her staff and micromanaged everyone from the lowest dishwasher to her Head Chef. Jessica in the workplace is fairly strict code of conduct when it comes to their work, and if they see coworkers valuing social activities and “good enough” workmanship over absolute excellence, it will be a turbulent environment. ISFJ are warm, considerate, gentle, responsible and a devoted caretaker who enjoys being helpful to others. The ISTJ is responsible, sincere, analytical, reserved, realistic and is a very hard worker, trustworthy with sound practical judgement. ISTJs prefer to keep themselves to themselves and so in conflict situations they will struggle with overt conflict. They are fine with more formal conflict. The ISFJ will initially close down on conflict as they prefer harmony and indeed will work hard at creating that. ISFJ will be a superb diffuser of conflict but they themselves do not enjoy it. Reactions are somewhat similar because ISFJs would probably shut down like Jessica did. The decision would be influenced on how to handle the situation by just observing everyone and making a mental note of these things that are occurring in the workplace.
Step 3 BIASES IN DECISION MAKING: Are there biases present in your reactions? Formulate your response by considering the following questions, ideas, and thoughts.
Yes, we all have a certain level of bias to a certain reaction. The comfort zone is a behavioral space where your activities and behaviors fit a routine and pattern that minimizes stress and risk. It provides a state of mental security. Seeking to please everyone. No, won’t be able to handle the conflict from the board members. The emotional reaction to the situation that Jessica has faced can be related to on a daily basis because a lot of men tends to not want to respect women when their placed in a position of power. Was all for standing her ground against the board members and the staff that she was in charge of. The influence of having a new position would warrant a level of respect both to the employees and them providing the same respect as their supervisor.
Step 4 CONCLUSIONS:
First impression results would definitely be to not fire Jessica because she was doing her job as the director in the club. They have the Chef thinking that he can say and do anything he wants to do because they do not want to fire or have him leave the club. Most time the feeling is if the board members won’t have her back then why is she placed in the position. She should be empowered by the board to do what she feels in order to managed the business smoothly both through the employees and the establishment. Because many decisions are based upon ethical components and boils down to treating each other with respect regardless of the age or gender. Sex and age are among the variables that affect decision making or rather that allow one to establish individual differences. According to the article, How Decision- Making is Different between men and women and why it matters in business they indicated that when women get stressed, they become emotional and fall apart, but when men are stressed, they remain calm and clear headed. (Caprino, 2016) The initial reaction is different from the way the situation would be handled at the club because the chef would definitely have to be told that he needs to respect Jessica and stop spending money on food without really understanding how the cost would be generated.
