Elements of argument

During communication there may be a scenario that occasions divergent or opposing views; and sometimes this scenario causes disagreement and arguments. In the book, ‘Elements of argument’ the writers expound on the dynamics brought about by communication and the turn they take from time to time. Some of the scenarios involved during communication may be on agreements and others the opposite outcome; and some of the explanations offered along that line showcase different styles or methods used by the authors, as a means of driving the point home. Under chapter four of the book, emphasis is laid as to why proper communication method should be utilized so as to ensure that the target audience understands what a particular message is all about.

In the article, ‘Will It Be Marriage or Civil Union?’ by Jo Ann Citron, a satirical approach has been used as a means by the writer to drive home his message. Various portions within the article are a pointer to this reality, one of them being the situation where Jo wonders how a term like ‘marriage equality’ exists. Jo was astonished as to how Massachusetts was trying to unravel the issue of marriage and ‘marriage equality’; some people argued that civil unions were the equality they needed, yet the bone of contention was acceptance of gay marriages in that society.

Satire or irony is also made evident when the court charges the legislature with the onus of bringing proper laws aligned with a ruling it had made some days back; but in an ironical twist, the legislature missed the core matter by not being thorough in regard to the issue. The judge in the ruling tried to bring the legislative body`s attention to the fact that they had a big role to play.

Conclusion

Different methods may be applied as a means of bringing to the readers’` attention to a particular subject or written matter; therefore writers need to observe a level of discretion and be intelligent as they relay their standpoint.
