Energy Use in House Heating and Cooling

On a hot summer day, when out of the house for a short period of time, about thirty minutes, it is advisable to turn up the thermostat as high as possible to conserve energy (Federal Government , 2017). This is to ensure that when one gets back to the house, a lowered thermostat setting will make the occupant of the house feel a cooling effect. It also ensures that the energy the cooling system is using for the house is minimal. When the thermostat is left at its normal size, the amount of energy the air conditioning uses to maintain a temperature at a normal rate is high because it entails spending more energy on cooling the air and balancing the humidity in dry areas. Therefore, when leaving the house for a short period of time, the air conditioning thermostat should be set as high as possible and turned down when getting back to the house.

On a cold winter day, the same policy is applicable. The thermostat should be set as low as possible to reduce the amount of energy used to raise the temperatures (Federal Government, 2017). This action will mean that when a thermostat setting is raised slightly, the occupant of the house will be more likely to adapt to a lowered temperature in the house after being out for thirty minutes in the cold weather. When leaving the house for a short period of time, it is not necessary to turn off the heating systems to ensure that when returning to the house, it is easy to set the thermostat at a lowered but comfortable setting. In energy conservation, it is more efficient to turn up the heat in the house from a lower point rather than switching the system on and off all together for a short time.
