ENF 3 unit 7

UNIT 7 LEARNING ACTIVITES
Type all activities on one document. Name that document, “Unit Seven Activities,” label each activity by number, and do not submit until all items have been completed. All videos and readings necessary for completion of the following activities are located either in “Unit Seven to Read” or “Unit Seven to View.” Practice sites will be posted with Unit Sseven “To Do.”
Activity One: Read Rules for Thesis Statements.  (Found in “Unit Seven to Read”) Select the thesis statement from one of your ENG. 111 essays and then evaluate it for each of the four rules for creating a thesis as they were stated in the reading selection. Hint! The rules are stated as main ideas directly below the bolded subtopics. Write your evaluation as a paragraph that begins with either, “My thesis statement meets…” or “My thesis statement does not meet some or all of the four rules stated in the article.” Support your evaluation response with evidence taken from the wording of your thesis statement.
Work Time Required: About 20 minutes.

Activity Two:  Select one of the following thesis statements and create three main idea statements  from the thesis statement you chose. Remember the main idea statements are reasons your thesis is true and are  used to organize body paragraphs.
Thesis One: Researchers have found a new cure for cancer but the pharmaceutical companies reject this cure because it is widely available, cannot be patented and is much less expensive than existing treatments. (Remember, you will need three main idea statements, one for each of your body paragraphs.)
Thesis Two: Marijuana should not be legalized because users report a much higher incidence of lower life satisfaction, poorer mental health, and more relationship problems. (Remember, you will need three main idea statements, one for each of your body paragraphs.)
Example: Rearing animals in cages with severe confinement and crowding causes those animals to suffer boredom, depression and physical health problems. Hint! Ask, “How does confinement and overcrowding cause boredom?” Your answer will be the main idea for your first body paragraph.
For example, my main idea for my first body paragraph would be:  “Confinement and overcrowding cause boredom because the animal cannot move about, change environment, or switch position.” For my next main idea sentence, I would use depression as my topic.
Work Time Required: About 30-45 minutes
Activity Three:   Read the article,  016 ENF 03 The Relationship between Clear and Critical Thinking and Writing.docx and make thinking notes as you read the article. Respond to the first set of critical thinking questions as you use them to evaluate any one of your English 111 essays. Submit proof of your thinking notes and write your responses using complete sentences that include examples that prove your response is an appropriate evaluation.
Example: My argument that raising animals in tight cages causes stress is valid and defensible because the facts, examples and anecdotes I use as supporting details demonstrate symptoms of stress and my examples contain evidence which proves the animals are suffering.
Work Time Required: About 20-30 minutes.
Activity Four: Open the link for Reading Workout Challenge 8 (ENF 03 READING WORKOUT CHALLENGE METACOGNITION.docx ) Follow the directions to read and respond in writing. Hint! If you copy and paste the workout pages into your saved activities document, you will be able to type your answers directly onto the pages.
Work Time Required: About 20 minutes

Activity Five:  Select either of the topics used to develop the thesis statements in Activity # 2. Research one of those topics, “Cure for cancer” or Legalization of marijuana,” and locate an example for each of the types of supporting details shown in Figure 6.1.  You should have at least five examples. Cite your sources using Noodle Tools Express.
