The three pillars employed by Colangelo College of Business are servant leadership, ethics and entrepreneurism. Servant leadership is based on stewardship, which is ‘Service before Self’ (Price, 2013). One learns to put the needs of the organization and the society before personal interests. Such an individual is esteemed as the hardest worker within the firm. He is able to invest in all the organization’s stakeholders; employees, consumers, the community, suppliers and creditors. He goes ahead to mobilize resources, train new and ongoing workers and invest in the spirit of teamwork. His guiding principles are grounded in the virtues of patience, selflessness, humility and kindness. As quoted by Jesus in the Bible, book of Matthew 20:26-28, whoever wants to be great among his peers must choose to serve.
Servanthood in transformational leadership relies on the ethics that make it authentic. Once I complete my masters degree, one of my goals will be to pursue transformational servant leadership. It requires commitment in pursuit, with sustainable goals well laid out. According to Muthia and Krishnan (2015), authentic servant leadership is based on advancing positive changes for the common good of all in the society instead of just minimizing harm and risks. Ethical leadership is distinguished by the ethics that ground it firmly.
I will avoid immoral behaviour displayed by individuals while at the helm of power, which is due to the fact that people tend to be inclined to their own will and ideas, and blinded by their judgement and morality of value. They fail to consistently submit to pursuing the common good. I will also practice transformational leadership, which is able to create a united front between the leaders and the workers involved in a functional team work. Concerns have been raised about the morality of transformational authentic leadership and pseudo-transformational (inauthentic) leadership. Servant Leaders exemplify their behaviour by first subscribing to those value systems before requesting it of others (Price, 2013).
Transformational leaders, sometimes, justify themselves by making exemptions, assuming that their behavioural role is authentic and relevant. For group performance and team work to be successful within the organization, it is important to reinforce any shared belief systems and values that can act as motivation to the members. As a leader, my goal will be to motivate members. I will avoid pseudo-transformational leadership, where leaders are usually aware values and their commitment to them but their self interests win them over (Muthia & Krishnan, 2015). In other cases, the leaders may be committed to the values but end up giving in to egoism. It can also be the case that leaders act out the interests of others but just use this as a means to an end.
A characteristic of the entrepreneurial spirit exhibited by an individual is passion. This is captured in the wave of authentic enthusiasm and energy in the face of challenges. He is also able to come up with innovative ideas on improving the running of the business, the manufacturing process and sale of products and service delivery. He tends to be optimistic in nature such that he is able to face the challenges that follow his big goals. He is able to carefully calculate and analyze the risks involved and must therefore be ready for any ambiguity. He has the desire and ability to execute his ideas at all times instead of just formulating ideas.
Entrepreneurship is basically a platform that allows individuals and firms to pursue multiple goals simultaneously (Markman et al., 2016). Emphasis is laid on the role of institutional tenacity, the operational government policies and social movements. Sustainability is often addressed and pursued by companies that display performance and responsibility. In entrepreneurship, my goal will be to address environmental, social and economic concerns. These are inclusive of overpopulation, slavery, poverty and corruption. It is crucial for an individual to address his actions and correct his inactions in attempt to achieve sustainability.
Entrepreneurial activities should interpret the types of governance, embrace new business models and innovations, and new organizational forms. This must be combined with the capabilities within the firm. Entrepreneurial firms that wish to grow into significance avoid environmental degradation and reduce the levels and forms of social injustices. Where the firms have expressed environmentally acceptable standards and embraced ethical measures in the running of activities, they attract more employees than their competitors at the average rate, employ a good number of workers at a low wage rate and gain more revenue from products and services. The products and brands created by the company enhance customer-loyalty, since the customers’ values are clearly displayed by the firm (Markman et al., 2016).
Relation of the Three Pillars to Christian Mission of Grand Canyon University
The Grand Canyon University is an interdenominational community and mission institution. Its code of ethics are based on human life, salvation, creation and moral truth. The ethical grounding of an organization heavily relies on respect, honour, integrity, customer-focus, results-oriented, risk-taking, passion and persistence. Servant Leadership cannot exist without ethics. In addition, entrepreneurial activities are needed by the general population to advance the humanity of society.
Transformational Servant Leadership bridges the gap between the leaders and the followers such that transparency in leadership inspires the workers’ effective and normative commitment. These leaders naturally show concern for their followers. In interviewing the ethics of this research, the value systems of the interviewer are of great concern since they authenticate the leadership. The practicality in servant leadership cannot be overlooked. I intend to find happiness in my career and my life after prioritizing these necessary areas.
In conclusion, completion of my Master’s degree will provide me with the opportunity to integrate servant leadership, ethics and entrepreneurism to my career opportunities. Application of ethics in my transformational leadership will enable me practice authentic servant leadership. In addition to authentic leadership, the practice of a sustainable and ethical entrepreneurism, which drives positive societal changes, will enable me meet the greater social good in my industry and within the community. The greater social good will only be achieved after matching good governance and leadership in entrepreneurship to the values of ethics.
