Evolution of the Virtual Organization
The evolution of virtual organization dates back to the start of the digital era which promoted efficiency and effectiveness of business all over the world. The evolution of virtual organization is explored by Donald Baack (2012) where he explains that boundaryless and virtual organizations take advantage of digitalization for their business operations. Digitalization has enabled virtual teams to conduct Meetings and work without face to face meetings by using different technologies like video conferencing, telephones, emails, Skype, text message, and other computer networks.
Pros and Cons of Virtual Organizations
Digital technologies and the internet have facilitated businesses to attain common goals like work schedules, problem-solving, information sharing, and collaboration. One advantage of a virtual organization is that it reduces the distance traveled and the stress felt while commuting to meetings and to work. A virtual setting is cost-efficient as one can work from home without incurring additional cost in terms of travel costs, office rents and other costs that come with a face to face set up. The setting is advantageous to the business as it can hire quality employees from all over the world to work virtually for their business. Lastly, such a setting eliminates the aspect of interruptions from individuals entering the office.
However, a virtual environment has several cons. One disadvantage of the technology is the element of independence which in the long run may reduce the productivity of employees. Other employees who are conversant with face to face human interaction may face challenges adopting the virtual environment. Lastly, the virtual environment eliminates the likelihood of forming a team that collaborates, communicates and blends well together.
Technological Device
Some examples of technological concepts that facilitate virtual environments include web conferencing, smartphones, and computers. Web conferencing s one of the smartest ways for the virtual organization. This is applicable mostly during group meeting where a member does not travel but complete their project or meeting virtually. The second technology is smartphones which enable the users to access different applications like messaging and email. This technology assists one to work virtually from their homes, cars or other places as need be. Lastly, is the use of computer laptops and tablets which enables users to conduct and complete complex tasks from anywhere.
