Florida International University Smoking Ban Essay

1. Watch the smoking ban debate short videoshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A0JMAQDpSk
Please note that the smoking advocate makes a false claim in Video 1 that smokers had lower levels of
covid infection and this is incorrect. Please check this out as an additional resource from the American
Lung Association covid and tobacco https://www.lung.org/getmedia/7c65fb45-6787-46d6-ac0779543f37bbc5/covid-tobacco.pdf

2. Read the second hand smoke case study.

You will need to reference both the video and the case study in your reflection so please ensure that you
watch the video and read the reflection carefully.
Expectations and how to do well in Draft of Writing Assignment 2
Reflection: The reflection you will write is based the posts and replies in Discussion board 3 and the
same case study and video you used in Writing Assignment 1.
A good place to start would be to look at the posts on discussion board 3 and then do some more
research because you will need to back up your claims with evidence (citations).
A good reflection should be able to demonstrate a depth of understanding about the issue at hand, an
evidence of clear connections between concepts and a broad integration of ideas. We are looking for
critical thinking and in depth analysis of ideas and issues.
So do some general research about the topic because this will come in handy during the assignment.
You are writing the reflection as yourself – not as any character!
Dont forget to check out the actual instructions on how to write this reflection on the next page.
Some other things to keep in mind
You are writing this reflection as yourself and not in any role. So do not mention the role you were
assigned in Writing Assignment 1.
However we are still discussing the same specific case study and you will need to reference this in this
assignment also.
Please include citations otherwise it becomes plagiarism and we all know better.
You must have both “in-text citations” using APA format as well a list of citations (references) at end of
the essay with full details of all the references (sources) you used in researching the content for your
essay. For more details with examples please see https://libguides.williams.edu/citing/apa (Links to an
external site.)
The essay should address all the questions posed – not just the ones the student likes best.
The content presented must flow and be written like an essay but in question-answer format.
Please read the instructions carefully. and follow them, answering all the questions posed and making
connections back to the discussion board and what your classmates playing various roles discussed.
Bring in some of your own experiences with the topic you are reflecting upon to support your
perspective on the issue. Discuss factual information, as well as your feelings and impressions. Compare
your experience with your prior knowledge on the subject (maybe you read or watched something that
pertains to the topic or maybe discussed it with someone).
Agree or disagree with a classmate’s perspective and use this to support your position/perspective. Be
professional about it (discuss your issues with the classmate’s beliefs and perspectives and with what
they wrote).
Question any claims/conclusions/facts made by a classmate you find dubious or raise doubts if any. Back
it up with evidence. Be professional about it (discuss your issues with the classmate’s beliefs and
perspectives and with what they wrote).
Check for grammatical and stylistic errors
Your reflection must be no more than 750 words.
Lets give credit where it is due. Let’s say your classmate Riley wrote something that resonated with you.
So you can mention that by pointing out his/her/their contribution and crediting them using their full
name…. along the lines of “Riley Jordon made an excellent point in his/her/their post on the Discussion
2: smokers forum that……”
YOU MUST STILL PARAPHRASE WHAT YOUR CLASSMATE SAID. We have all signed the plagiarism
agreement and completed the plagiarism quiz. We know that when you are quoting a classmate, it is not
a correct practice to copy and paste what they said, even if you put it within “quotes” and add their
name. Please be careful.

Here are the questions you need to consider when writing the reflection
1) Provide a brief and concise summary in your own words (two to three sentences is plenty).
2) Discuss medical, ethical and societal issues that surround the passage of laws regarding smoking in
indoor public areas and the subsequent pressure on eliminating public outdoor sources of second hand
smoke. Which of these are scientifically based reasons? Explain and cite references.
3) Explain how completing Lab 2 (Up in Smoke) impacted your understanding and opinions on this topic.
If it helped, how did it help. If not, why? Please explain clearly.
4) Discuss how the group discussions helped solidify your opinion or change your opinions with
examples (giving credit where it is due). Explain what someone said that made you stop and think and
why you thought that was important to you.
5) Do you think the decision to ban smoking in public areas is a national, state or local government
issue? Why? Clearly explain your position as to why you think it is an issue for particular level(s) of
government and why you think the other level(s) should not be involved. Support/supplement your
position with information your classmates provided on Discussion Board 2 (giving credit where it is due).
7) Based on the problem presented and your experience during Writng Assignment 1 and Discussion
Board 2, formulate a smoking policy in the outdoor dining area that will benefit everyone – the café
owner and all the customers (smokers/non-smokers/local law makers/ town resident). Support your
perspective with concrete ideas and highlight your reasoning. Please ensure that it does not affect the
profits of the café. (Point to ponder: Could methods used to effectively reduce smoke in enclosed
indoor areas possibly be adapted and tweaked to work in an outdoor public area that allows smoking! )

This is my writing assignment 1
Smoking is very popular in most countries today (Parnell et al., 2021). In this case study, we see that Joshua had initially allowed
smoking outside the restaurant, but later, this brought a lot of negative and positive effects. The positive effect, in this case, is
that many younger individuals enjoyed smoking while taking other drinks or items, for instance, food items; the negative effects
include the fact that many wealthier and healthier customers started evading the place, thus reducing the profit for the
business. However, as noted in the videos(Good Morning Britain), most public places have been restricted against outside
smoking.
As a nonsmoker customer of Joshua, I see this topic as very important to the public and society. Apart from the fact that it helps
inform the business person about the effect of such in their business operation, it helps society realize the importance of caring
for one another’s health. This is because when smoking outside, many other people will be affected as nonsmokers. This is
dangerous for those with a condition like diabetes, chest complication and cancer, among many other vulnerable conditions. It
helps society to understand the essence of separating restaurants or other luxury or recreational places from bars.
On many occasions, I have encountered some of the victims of the smoke that comes from outside smokers, and many of them
claimed to have been infected with a chronic disease like chest pain. I cannot buy anything or sit in a restaurant when people
are smoking outside. Therefore this makes me look for an optional restaurant with no smoking.
Comparing my experience with my knowledge on the topic, I see that secondhand smoking is very dangerous and negatively
affects one’s business. Some of the effects of secondhand smoking include nasal irritation, lower respiratory illness, and
reproductive effect in women, such as low birth weight and middle ear disease (Hammam and Gheita, 2017). It also has
secondhand smoke on blood vessels and increases the risk of a heart attack. Therefore, this is much similar to what I have
experienced in the various case I have from my closest relatives.
The case study portrays my perspective, and we see that Mr Joshua has started losing customers, particularly nonsmokers.
Hence, in my subsequent perspective, the outside smoking behavior in such restaurants chases away a customer and reduces
business efficiency. Therefore, I agree with the case study’s perspective. Many children in society today are being spoiled
because of secondhand smoking. This is because when they see adults smoking outside, they also get influenced and get active
smokers.
In conclusion, secondhand smoke is very dangerous to one’s health. This includes the fact that it brings more complications
Healthwise, as mentioned above. From the videos, I learned that it is very important to prohibit smoking outside in areas like
universities and other public places. This is because it was health hazardous. Smoking is dangerous and should not be advised in
any place. For example, in England’s council, several states have considered banning the smoke (Good Morning Britain).

Coffee and Cigarettes:
Second-Hand Smoke
and Smoke-Free Laws

It was Joshua Davenport’s dream to own a coffee bar/bistro, the
kind that he had frequented in the Trastevere section of Rome
as an exchange student in his senior year of high school. Being
from the small town of Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania, situated on
the Delaware River, he wanted to bring that old world elegance
to his rural community, a place where neighbors could meet
and converse over espresso drinks prepared by an expert barista.
“Espressivo” was conveniently located in the borough and attracted many young people, especially the college students
from the nearby campus, where Espressivo was known as the hot spot (commonly referred to as “E”), a cultural mecca
with monthly art galleries, acoustic bands, and poetry slams. It also attracted an older clientele, who came before and/
or after work to either start their day or end it, as well as on weekends, as part of their shopping ritual for antiques and
other curios from the unique shops in town.
In keeping with the tradition of a European espresso bar, Joshua allowed smoking inside the bar and the patio that
surrounded the open-air layout of the corner location. Although Joshua was a reformed smoker himself, he wanted
his customers to feel comfortable. Besides, Pennsylvanians were known for being especially vocal about their personal
and political rights, rights that the Founding Fathers had established and fought for in the near by battles of the
Revolutionary War.
But in September of 2008, the state passed the Pennsylvania Clean Indoor Air Act, which prohibited the smoking
of tobacco products in most indoor public places, although it included a provision that allowed businesses to offer
outdoor smoking on all patios, decks, and outdoor seating areas. The general public had become aware of the harmful
effects of second-hand smoke and the cover-ups of previous research by “Big Tobacco.” Public pressure not only
influenced the indoor smoking bans in many states, but also fostered negative attitudes towards smoking in outdoor
areas and the issue of second-hand smoke. After the Clean Indoor Air law was passed, many neighboring family-style
restaurants with outdoor seating began to extend the smoking ban to their outside dining areas.
Joshua had observed that many of his regular younger customers liked to smoke while enjoying their drinks and small
menu items, but he also noticed that his wealthier weekend/working clientele were negatively commenting about his
outdoor smoking policy, and there was a slight decrease in business from families. Joshua needed to decide whether
to continue to allow outdoor smoking or to ban smoking in keeping with the trend towards reducing exposure to
second-hand smoke.
