From Dishwasher to Store Manager

When I come to Los Angeles, I did not speak English and had no job experience. I
desperately needed a job to earn money for my upkeep, but it was difficult to get a job when I
could only speak Spanish.
Several companies turned me down, but I finally landed a job with a Mexican
restaurant in December. They needed a dishwasher and did not require experience. I liked the
job because I did not need have to talk when working at the back of the kitchen. I was only
responsibility for the dishes and cutlery from the dining room. According to Kinsman,
dishwashing is a difficult job because of handling dirty dishes in cold water and using bare
hands. One day a co-worker who I barely knew, brought in a cooler and asked me to clean it.
Although it was not in my responsibilities to clean coolers, I decided to do it anyway, hoping
that he could return the favor and become my friend. Using a sponge and cold water, I
cleaned the cooler so well that when he came for it he could not believe his eyes. He
immediately went and showed my supervisor what I had done, and asked him to re-assign to
the store. It was then that I learnt that he was the manager. After some training I became the
new store manager, with a much better salary and more responsibilities.
This was a lesson to me that every time I am called to do job, I should do it with all
my ability. I should not discredit a job just because it looks too lowly. And the path to success
is hard and trying.
