This course is of particular importance to me as illustrated by the gap analysis. I have come to learn important concepts in personal leadership assessment, goal-setting, implementation, and strategic decision making. In goal setting, I have found that I need more training and development in the formulation of good career goals besides excelling at personal knowledge proficiency and formulating goals that are SMART. Other areas such as self-awareness and awareness of others have come out strong especially in understanding my colleagues and being interested in learning about other people I work with. Self-management and management of others are also some aspects that I have weaknesses and strengths to work about. For instance, I stand on the fence when it comes to handling criticism, being under pressure, and being naïve about the organization. The formation of judgment of others in a democratic way as explained by Di Fiore (2018) and the generation of information is a tendency I need to develop.
In strategic decision-making, I have been able to generate documents required in projects, as well as, information that one uses to investigate a problem. On the same footing, I have faced some challenges and triumphs. Challenges came in the form of abilities and skills to scan the external environment. This was further compounded by inexperience in the evaluation of the strategic implications of international markets. The evaluation of an organization’s internal capabilities, as well as, the evaluation of how human capital can be used to serve as a source of competitive advantage seemed elusive and as such, needs to be worked on as advised by Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, and Wright (2006). I was, however, confident in my assessment of market opportunities and marketing information.
In conclusion, the gap analysis has been important in helping me identify the areas I need to work on and the areas where I am competent in. In general, I can claim that my strategic skills need more sharpening, which according to Stoyanova (2018) are critical skills for innovation.
