Gender segregation in the prayer ritual of Israel

The Women of the Wall (Wow) is an organization of multi-denominational women based
in Israel. The goal of Wow is to fight for the rights of Jewish women to do prayer at Western
Wall, Kotel, through reading audibly from Jewish Torah, singing and putting on religious
garments. A large group of women from many denominations converge at that Western Wall, to
worship and pray together. However, their practice met violent oppositions, comprising of
thrown chairs, cruel police arrests and tear-gassing. These women are brave, and through
peaceful oppositions, they go to the western wailing wall of Kotel in order to fight for their right
to equal religious involvement.
The women are segregated in the worshiping wall due to the Orthodox law that
segregates Jewish women in worshipping places. However, the women should not be segregated
because, there is no Israel laws that binds women from having more space as men. The
misogynistic Conformist law also excluded women from putting on traditional prayer garments,
but the Wow filed a case in Israeli Supreme Court and the prohibition has been deemed
unconstitutional. The main criticism about Wow is that women are defying the gender parts
attributed to them by Judaism.
Prayer ritual is a sensitive and volatile issue because it is deemed uniting among the Jewish
people. The minority of ultra-Orthodox among Israelis has a significant effect on the freedom of
women worship, and has described Wow as subversive. However, the tussle by Wow is positive
as it tries to reduce the influence of the Orthodox religious practices of Israelis, moderate their
influence and introduce a religious pluralism in Israeli.
