Genetics is defined as the study of human heredity. Genomics is defined as the study of genes and the related techniques of genes and its functions (Doudna & Sternberg, 2017). The difference between genetics and genomics is that genetics only looks over the functions and composition of a single gene, while genomics on the other hand examines all genes and their relationships which helps identify the organism’s development and the influence of gene on the growth of the organism. Nurses can be involved in policy making in the field of genomics since they make very large contributions in this field of genetics and genomics. Mostly nurses do have the intimate information of their patients’ family and community backgrounds hence they will be in a good position to identify the patients’ family members at risk of the genetic and genomic influenced condition, enough experience with the technologies and information on genetics and genomics, proper skills to build and communicate coalitions and above everything they are trusted by the society. Therefore, in case a child has a genetic influenced condition, nurses have the chance to help his/her family prepare and cope with the condition (Vogel, 2016). The organizations that are open to nurses in the field of genomics include; the International Society of Nurses in Genetics (ISONG), which is mostly dedicated to foster the growth of nurses in human genetics and genomics both professionally and scientifically, the National Coalition for Health Professional Education in Genetics (NCHPEG), which is mostly involved in promoting health education about genetics and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), which mostly deals in fostering the basics and research on implications of genetics and genomics (Kumar & Elliott, 2018).
