Given the importance of the facility department and the responsibilities of the director of
facilities, why do you think a facility director’s average salary is lower than the rest of the hotel’s
executive committee

The director of a facility has important responsibilities which are majorly concerned with
representing the facility to the outside community, representing the facility in meetings and
doing approvals that have been presented by the directors of departments. His duties are not as
involving as those of the other executive committee members. For instance, his major roles
include approving the documents that have been prepared to advertise various tenders from
different departments. In such cases, the individuals in charge of preparing the tenders may have
been different executive members such as the food and beverage director.
Some of the difficult roles of the facility’s departmental directors that make them to be
highly paid include: managing and supervising projects within their departments, calculating and
making comparisons of the costs of the services and goods that are required in their departments,
planning for developments that are in line with the objectives of the hotel, leading and
coordinating one or several teams on certain tasks in their departments, reviewing and preparing
wage and salary programs, developing and maintaining human resource systems that meet the
needs of the facility. All these tasks are very much involving and may pass without the director
of the facility noticing or even getting involved.
The director of a facility does not get involved with the employees as much as the
directors of departments in the facility are. Departmental directors are much involved with

employees and customers. Dealing with employees can sometimes be so much involving and
stressful. Less association with the employees may explain the director’s less salaries. Generally,
salaries within the facility are as per the responsibilities, roles and tasks of the specific
individuals.
