Nursing is a fantastic career because it allows one to work directly with people or indirectly through creation of programs which enable them live longer lives that have good health. In nursing, I work as a caregiver, providing hands-on care to patients in different settings. This includes most physical needs that range from total care to helping individuals prevent illnesses. It is nurses who maintain the dignity of patients while at the same time providing skilled care that is knowledgeable (Drennan, 2017). One reason why I want to pursue a masters in nursing is to offer better service to my community. The advantage of doing a masters degree in nursing is the opportunity to specialize. One can specialize in fields that are interesting to them. Some areas of specialization include pediatric care, oncology, mental healthcare, oncology and cardiac. My area of specialization will be cardiac health care.

            As a cardiac nurse, I will work alongside cardiologists and other healthcare providers to offer cardiovascular care to patients with chronic and acute heart maladies. Working as a cardiac nurse will allow me to help save majority of patients hospitalized with heart problems. My inspiration to become a nurse, and a now cardiac nurse, was from my paternal grandmother. When I was nine and a half years old, my grandmother died from congestive heart failure. I wished I was old enough to be a cardiologist to help treat and care for her. From then on, I have always wanted to be a nurse and increase my knowledge to become a cardiologist who will serve the community better. Being in the cardiac unit as a cardiac nurse will motivate me to provide better services because my grandmother will always be on my mind.

            I want to do a masters degree in nursing because it will allow me to do much in cardiac units, which I don’t have to ability to do without specialization. According to Walker (2014), cardiac nurses must posses high education levels and skills so that they can be up for the task. A masters in cardiac nursing will increase my knowledge and skills, and allow me to diagnose, treat and manage conditions which affect the cardiovascular system, which is one of the most complex systems in human beings. As a specialized advanced practice registered nurse, I will get the opportunity to promote client’s cardiovascular health through preventive measures which involve counselling, stress tests, screening and disease prevention and management strategies (Drennan, 2017). In addition to care on congestive heart failure, which took my grandmother’s life, I will also have the opportunity to provide care to clients with coronary heart diseases. Part of my duty will also be to provide post-operative care to patients recovering from heart transplants or bypass surgery.

            All these healthcare services in cardiac unit will be service to the community, which a masters degree will enable me to engage in. Increased knowledge will allow me provide holistic care which emphasizes that a whole individual is greater than sum of their parts. While other nurses provide health care in other areas, I will make individuals whole by providing care in cardiac issues. Advanced knowledge will help me to better address psychosocial, cultural, spiritual and developmental needs of patients with cardiac problems. Lastly, I believe increased education will make me a better decision-maker by raising my critical thinking skills.
