Gun Laws in USA

Is it time to introduce Gun Laws in United States?

United States of America is known for extensive investments to protect its citizens from external attack through the well-trained military which is equipped with advanced weapons. However, the country has failed miserably to protect its citizens from the enemy within. The rampant and sporadic mass shootings reveal how the citizens are vulnerable for an ill-motived individual with an access to a gun including military grade weapons. Among the targets of these shoot outs are innocent school children in schools. It is from these incidences that I hold the position that it is a high time America introduced gun laws to control access and availability of guns to the public. The latest shooting at Thousand Oaks, where 13 people were killed, was the 307th mass shooting in 311 days. According to Gun Violence Archive, these incidences have claimed a total of 328 people and injured 1251 (Miller & McCoy, 2018). It has been revealed that 4 biggest mass shootings in the last 50 years occurred in 2018. These are worrying statistics which indicate that the time is ripe for having strict gun laws. With every freedom, comes a sense of responsibility. It is however clear that American have an appetite of using the guns against fellow innocent citizens. Among the greatest opposer to strict gun laws is the National Rifle Association which has a membership of 5 million members (Zurcher, 2017). The NRA is a great influencer and spends huge sums of money on lobbying and direct contributions to politicians. Their impact has seen the congress fail to enact a law of gun control. The question that still lingers is, “How many lives of innocent Americans do we want to lose before the parliament gets the courage to put place in place federal laws to regulate the firearms?
