In the article Marriage and Cohabitation in the U.S., by Juliana Menasce Horowitz, Nikki
Graf and Gretchen Livingston, multiple surveys have been done to see how couples who live
with an unmarried partner and married couples doing in their relationships. From a survey taken
for adults ages 18 to 44, 59% say they have lived with an unmarried partner and 50% have been
married. Older adults, ages 50 and older also find societal benefits in marriage than long term
couples that do not decide to get married. Another study was done to see the amount of trust and
satisfaction there was between married couples and those living with unmarried partners. The
results showed that married couples express more trust and higher levels of satisfaction with their
relationship. It was found that a high percentage of adults who are married and those living with
an unmarried partner say that love and companionship are the reason for getting married or
living with that partner. A few other surveys taken have shown that a majority of Americans say
that couples who are living together that are not married can raise children just as well as married
couples and only a small percentage of men and women say that being married is essential to live
a fulfilling life.
Throughout this article, I did not find any assumptions or underlaying bias made by the
authors. The article shows both non-married and married couples that are cohabitating including
same-sex relationships, different religious groups, and political party affiliations. If the authors
were to have underlying bias in this article, they could show only the benefits to being married
and make the article seem one-sided. The authors could have only focused on non-married
couples that cohabitate because it is becoming more acceptable for unmarried couples to live
together even if they don’t plan to get married. The surveys could have also singled out same-sex
relationships, different religious groups, or political party affiliations.

As I read this article, I only run into any words or sentences that evoked a strong response
from me. “Relatively small shares of U.S. adults say being married is essential for a man (16%)
or a woman (17%) to live a fulfilling life.” This sentence really hit me because it has shown how
little marriage means too some people. It’s not that it is a bad thing in our society today, it just
shows that more people are happy just being in a relationship. 26% of men and 30% of women
say it is more essential to be in a committed romantic relationship, which I totally agree with
because your able to have the love and companionship without all the other obligations that
come along with marriage. Many of the other different surveys and the results that were
discussed didn’t surprise me at all. For example, obviously there is going to be more trust and
satisfaction with a relationship between adults that are married and the fact that love and
companionship are the reasons for getting married or living with a partner.
Overall, I think this article is great for people who are thinking of living with their partner
even if they are not married or for couples who are married just to see what other people in the
U.S. experience relationships. In my personal experience I have never lived with a partner, nor
have I ever been married, but from growing up and watching my parents experience, I can see
why married adults were found to be more satisfied with their relationship and more trusting.
This article gave me a few things to think about when it comes to living with a partner or being
married, like why I would want to live with my partner or if being married is something that is
essential for me to live a fulfilling life.
