Review of health status In the State of Michigan

In Michigan there is high rate of adolescent immunization, low occurrence of infectious disease and high availability of dental care. Main health challenges are binging and obesity but there are improvements such as an 8% decrease in adult smoking, a 27% reduction in air pollution 14% increase in immunization and an 8% decrease in hospitalization.

Adult-related health services include smoking, binging and poor physical health days. Adults smoking in Michigan dropped by 5% in 2014, binge drinking, was ranked 40 with rates of 20% in 2012, 19% in 2013 and 18.5% in 2014, while poor physical health days stagnated at 4.1 days between 2012 and 2014.

Health services associated with children include youth smoking low birth weight, immunization and teenage births. Smoking among high school students stood at 13.5% in 2012 and 2013, dropped 9% in 2014. Teenage birth rate rated poorly at 30 births/1000 teenage females in 2012, 27 in 2013 and 25 in 2014. Child immunizations improved from 68% in 2012, to 70% in 2013 and 2014, ranking the state at 24.

Health services associated with women and pregnancy include childbirth, STI, anemia, and mineral supplements. Preterm births in Michigan was 12.2% in 2012, 12% in 2013 and 11.8% in 2014. Low birth weight of below 2500g was 8.4% in 2012, 8.3% in 2013 and 8.4% in 2014, and 34.5% of teenage females received HPV immunization in 2014. 

How the State of Michigan is Promoting utilization of Preventive Health Services in the Affordable Care Act (ACA)

The state of Michigan raised minimum wages to $8.5 so that more adults could afford healthcare. The ACA, guarantees availability of health care for women’s unique health needs such as child birth, cervical cancer screening and menopause. ACA prohibits charging of premiums for women health-related services and allows them to choose a health plan that best suits their needs. The act also supports child programs like immunization, autism, drug and alcohol abuse, and hearing impairment.
