Welcome to our class discussion board!
Unlike the reading reflections, where you will think more about the reading materials, this discussion board is a place where we’ll share our opinions and thoughts that help us think beyond lectures. I want this class to also be a place where we think about how the information we take from here helps us in our own journey towards understanding and valuing what this knowledge means to us. Even if the prompts for some questions on the board include readings, they will still ask you for your impressions rather than the analysis of the texts themselves.
So, here we go.
1) One of the main themes we will be exploring in the course is the variety of human experience throughout the turbulent past century. With that in mind, I invite you to take a virtual exhibition tour in the National WWI Museum and Memorial (located in Kansas City), one of the largest institutions dedicated to the preservation of its memory. The link below will direct you to the exhibition list. Those that have “online” label in the lower left corner of the pictures are the ones you can click on and visit virtually (inside, click on the “enter the exhibition”). You can visit as many as you like. For the purposes of this discussion board, share with us at least one thing that you learned, that stood out to you or surprised you in the exhibition you chose. Tell us why you think you chose to share what you did – it will be a nice way for us to learn about each other. (1 pt)

2) This week, while talking about WWI, you had a chance to read two short poems, by Wilfred Owen and Rupert Brooke, which depict two contradictory sentiments related to the soldiers’ experience on/approaching the battlefield. What was your impression after reading these poems? Do you think these personal, subjective accounts help (if at all) historians in their research of war? Remember, there is no right or wrong answer here.(1 pt)
After your main post, please react/reply to one of your peers’ posts addressing both questions(1 pt). There is no length limit to either the main post or reply, but bear in mind you will earn points by showing some good faith effort and thoughtfulness in your post and reply.
Thank you for your hard work and engagement with our course materials! I really appreciate your opinions and input.
