Skylar Haines is a character that every reader would hate to not love. The girl may have struggled with personal issues for a better part of her life, but the character she displayed was both rousing and engrossing. I was obsessed with Skylar and Jessop Haines’ relationship. They had an eccentric grandfather and granddaughter relationship, making them the most fascinating pair in the book. Skylar always wanted to experiment and try new things. I enjoyed her high adrenaline levels as they made her adventurous and distinct. Her story got to be more exciting when she got the urge to start flying. Skylar as a hardened stunt pilot is one of the things that made me love her more. Her life in the sky created an illusion in my mind where I imagined myself as her co-pilot.
The story shifted from being thrilling to a little bit scary when Skylar came across a peculiar storm that left her confused and dazed. The reader is left shaken, frightened but still has the urge to read on. I could imagine how disastrous things could have been had I been in Skylar’s space. In an attempt to save the day, Skylar almost hit an aircraft head-on. This is where my heart stopped. I love how the author makes one too invested in the main character’s life, that when scenarios like the storm happen, one feels like they are part of the storyline. I held my breath as I read on, hoping that Skylar would survive this bizarre storm. Skylar somehow managed to land safely and was taken to another time. I was not prepared for the turn of events as Kaylin McFarren introduced us to another feature in the story, time travel.
‘High Flying’ is a stimulating, sensational and brilliant fantasy book that will have you fall in love with the characters and the writing style the author applied. You will go for adventures, time travel, view life from a different spectrum and enjoy the events in the plot. I loved the transition of Skylar throughout the book. I at first viewed her as a gloomy, depressed and miserable character because of the criticism of her grandfather. I for many reasons wished her father was in the picture. Skylar, however, developed to this amazing and skilled character that everyone loved. Her relationship with her friends was fun too, as she tried to live out loud. I appreciate the author’s efforts to make Skylar the one character that every reader loved.
The action, adventure, humor, writing tone, creativity, suspense, and plot twists are some the things that make ‘High Flying’ an electrifying book. I recommend the book to readers who enjoy psychological fiction as this book will have you hooked from the start to the end. The most exciting part is perhaps when Skylar went back in time. Time traveling made Skylar wonder if by changing her past, she could change her future. The chapters are excellently arranged and Kaylin McFarren’s diction above standard. I rate this book with 4 out of 5 stars.
