HIPAA Legislative

HIPAA is a legal act that was enacted in 1996. Section 261 through 264 of HIPAA required that the secretary of HHS publicize the privacy and security of the health system and the standard of electronic exchange. The secretary was to issue privacy regulation policy for the individual identifiable information if the congress failed to enact a privacy policy within three years of passage of HIPAA (HHS.org, 2013). On November 3, 1999, HHS developed a proposed policy and released it to the public for review.  The policy was published on December 28, 2000. The modification of the policy was posted on August 14, 2002.

HIPAA has impacted on the handling of the patient’s information and thus improving the quality of health care. The policy guards the privacy, security, notification of breaches, and sharing of the individual health information. That limits the doubt and the uncooperativeness of patients in giving out their information. It makes it easy for the practitioners to handle the patients effectively without many guesses due to lack of full details. The policy helps the patient to easily access their health information that can help liaise with the medical practitioners in receiving medication at their homes. That would help in the advancement of technology and even in the future.

Quality regulatory agency

In the regulation of quality, confidentiality, security, and privacy are essential (Grimm, 2014). The policy thus prevents the scenarios that arise with the negligence or sheer ignorance of the medical practitioners. HIPAA provides health practitioners and the patients an environment of trust and protection from the public. The patients have the ease of accessing healthcare with standardized care from the practitioners.
