SAMPLE BUSINESS PROPOSAL
Justification based on census data
In the decades following Ohio’s admittance to the Union in 1803, the population of the state skyrocketed. Between 1810 and 1830, Ohio’s population
more than quadrupled. This population increase was the result of the growing employment opportunities provided by the factories and construction of
multiple canals throughout the state. New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio had the largest number of breweries in the first half of the nineteenth century.
In 1810, there were enough breweries in each state to serve between 16,000 and 22,000 state citizens. With the population of Ohio quadrupling since
1810, there is a greater demand for breweries and good beer. Ohio’s 1830 population most closely resembles New York’s population in 1810. There
were forty-two breweries operating in the state of New York at that time, while only thirteen were operating in Ohio. Following the trend in New York
and the proportion of people to breweries, there is an opportunity to open approximately another thirty breweries in Ohio between 1810 and 1830.

The Temperance Movement, the first anti-alcohol movement in the United States to gain serious traction, grew in the 1830s. Newspapers in the 1830s
and 1840s contained advertisements and other writings condemning the consumption of alcohol. One such advertisement claimed that the consumption
of alcohol “instigated the commission of 3,700 murders,” “caused two thousand persons to commit suicide,” and “made not less than two thousand
widows.” Additionally, the same advertisement called “every patriot and every friend of man … to take arms against the common enemy and expel
him from our borders.” (The Maumee Express, Maumee City, August 12, 1837) While these claims clearly demonstrate that the brewing industry was
under attack, they also demonstrate that there was a significant and growing market for alcohol sales in the state of Ohio. Three weeks previous to this
advertisement, the same newspaper announced that several brewers were suing one Edward C. Delavan for $300,000 for stating that “poisonous drugs,
filthy water, & c. were used in the manufacture of strong beer.” (The Maumee Express, Maumee City, July 1, 1837) Although the brewing industry was
under attack, brewers still possessed enough influence to sue for libel for a considerable sum of money.
