ASK AND ANSWER EXTRA CREDIT WRITTENASSIGNMENT
The extra credit written assignments is worth 20 points. These are called “Ask and Answer”
assignments, because you will be required to both ask and answer a question about biology that
interests you. All papers must be TYPED. NO WRITTEN PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED. YOU MUST BE IN CLASS TO TURN IN
YOUR PAPER IN PERSON, YOU MAY NOT PUT IT IN MY MAILBOX. NO E-MAILED
OR FAXED PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
1)Here are the guidelines:
Think of a biological/science question that relates in some way to what you have studied in
Biology, but which was not answered in class or in the Textbook. Try to think of
something that is of interest to you. Some examples that relate to the topics in the text are:
(These are only examples, and you should try to think of your own creative ideas)
a) Do molds reproduce sexually or asexually?
b) How do reflexes work?
c) What is an example of the use of isotopes in medicine?
d) How does pollution result in acid rain?
e) How do buffers in the blood work?
f) What foods are highest in starch?

Find the answer or at least part of the answer to your question. You may use
textbooks, encyclopedias, magazine or journal articles etc. You may search the
internet for information, but be sure to determine the source and its date.
Write a typed, 2-page paper that summarizes your research. (It should be single spaced, and
must NOT continue beyond 2 pages. Section III should be at least 400 words.) The paper
should include the following sections: (See next page for format)
I)
State your question, and explain why it is of interest to you. (1 pts)
II)
Indicate the source of information you found (Journal name, author,
etc. You must have at least 2 sources. If it is from an internet source, specify
the source – i..e.Government agency, University etc.). Be sure to include the
publication date. (2 pts)
III)
This should be the longest portion of your paper. Summarize what you
learned regarding the answer to your question.
(10 pts).
IV)
Additional comments such as: Of the information you summarized in
part 111, what did you learn that you found particularly interesting?
What further questions do you have? (7 pts)

This paper should represent original student work. If two papers contain the same
question and the same source of information, plagiarism will be suspected. All
references must be cited, and direct quotes from the references must be indicated as
such. using quotation marks. In the case of plagiarism, all students involved will
receive a “0” on the first such assignment. Thereafter, plagiarism will be handled
according to the College’s Academic Honesty Policy, with possible failure of the
course and suspension from the College.
