Criminology entails the study of the law enforcement and criminal justice system. Criminology is a branch of sociology and one that covers a various range of topics related to crime. It goes deeper beyond studying the causes of crime to also covering the social impact of the criminal activities. Criminology focuses on trying to gain an understanding of every conceivable aspect of deviant behavior. It also considers the impact of criminal acts on the individual victims, their families, the society and the criminal engaged. To achieve this, the following topic are focused upon; the frequency at which the crimes occur, the location of different acts of crime, causes of crimes, types of crime, individual and social reactions and consequences of crimes, and the reaction of the government.

Security management, on the other hand, deals with the identification of the various assets and coming up with documented measures on how to protect these assets. Security management helps one in the classification of the assets, assessing any possible risks and threats, and coming up with rate system vulnerabilities. Security management seeks to ensure the availability and implementation of effective controls.

Importance of studying criminology and security management

The task of enhancing security in the society requires developing an intelligent mind for those charged with it. Criminals are becoming more intelligent and risks and threat becoming more diversified. Studying criminology and security management helps an individual acquire extensive knowledge and understanding of the theoretical perspective of crime and criminal behavior. This follows an assertion by Edwin Sutherland who indicated that the main task of criminology is to offer an explanation of criminal behavior which involves developing and analyzing various theories to aid in the understanding of crime (Karrison). 

Undertaking this course will offer one an opportunity to explore the various types, approaches and emerging security challenges which will be a big boost to the human capacity tasked with managing crimes. With the skills that will be acquired through studying criminology and security management, one will be better placed to carry out scientific investigations, interpret official documents in various criminal acts as well as participate at an advanced level on the debate about scientific crime investigation, prevention, and management as an expert in the field.

Studying criminology and security management is essential as it helps understand and take into account the social relativity when dealing risks and threats to crime as well as actual acts of crime.  This enables one to interpret the social occurrences in the context that they occur depending on cultural experiences and personal interest. This helps one gain an understanding of why a single crime has a different meaning to the criminal, criminologist, investigators, and the victims. 

The study of criminology and security management at a bachelor’s level is regarded as a niche degree often characterized by a high student to staff ratio. This causes the adoption of small group teaching that helps one acquire greater access to knowledge. With this knowledge, one is presented with an opportunity in launching a career in police investigative or court support activities. One can also be engaged by the government to assist in coming up with effective social policies that can help prevent or combat crime. More opportunities can be exploited in the private security sector, where be engaged by the private security agencies.
