Inequality and the American Dream

Situate the reading rhetorically: establish the pitch, complaint, moment and audience
The author makes an argument of the extents that American leaders have gone trying to
accomplish the American dream of a good economy. However, the efforts bring about more
inequality. The audience for this article includes most countries that take ‘American model’ and
implement it. American leaders are also part of the audience because they come up with these
models. The author warns those countries telling them that not all models are as good as they
seem to be. The author makes complaints to American leaders for coming up with models that
are not beneficial to the citizens.
What seems to be at stake in the text and/or why does this text matter?
In the text, the citizens of America are at the risk of losing opportunities to non-
Americans. America attracted immigrants, who according to the author, take most job
opportunities and the citizens are left struggling. The author refers to this as ‘exporting jobs’ and
adds that even college degrees no longer assure American citizens jobs with a good pay. The
article matters because the ‘American model’, that is not effective, is taken by other nations such
as Japan. The author uses the text to tell the world that such a model is not good to be copied. He
argues that only one out of four Americans think of the economy doing well with such a move.
Consequences: if we think in the way the authors seem to want us to, what might we gain and/or
what might we lose?
If we think like the author, we are not likely to gain. However, more would be lost
because of the negativity that would develop after reading the article. The author mentions
George Bush exporting jobs and immigrants wrecking the system. Consequences of thinking like

the author would be hatred towards the leaders and to the immigrants, who seems to be taking
most of the jobs.
