Informative Speech- What Dreams are

Chris Widener, a celebrated American author, and motivational speaker said, “Vision is the spectacular that inspires us to carry the mundane.” Dreams are nothing short of a mundane desirable, yet wearisome, uninteresting, and uneventful and often they go unachieved. Just think of how all of us dreamt that at our current ages would be far from where we presently are economically and socially. Just think!

As sure as the sun shines, only a meager percentage of the world’s population lives on to see their dreams turn real. Most of those who see their dreams turn into reality are those who do not even have a dream. I know that statement sounds controversial, but yes, without a dream, you are living your best life even if you feed on the garbage! Unfortunately, most of us never question whether we really have a dream or we just admire the lives of other people, which is still okay. Or probably, we could be inheriting dreams!

In this spectacular moment, I would like to introduce to you the new and millennial meaning of dreams. They are things that look superstitious yet achievable. They are the embodiment of whom we are and whom we are meant to be. We were never meant to be born, live along, get old and then die, that was not the goal! By virtue of being born as humans, dreams come in handy. In our tender ages, we all want to be something that is valuable in the society. I remember I used to say, “When I grow up, I want to be President.” I’ve probably not yet grown up, just a little older maybe.

Now to view what dreams are, let us look into the literal dream. It is a series of thoughts that occur in the mind when one is asleep. Psychologists define the natural dream as a succession of images, ideas, emotions and sensations that occur involuntarily when one is asleep. Just like the natural one, dreams are involuntary; there is something inside you that pushes you to achieve them. You don’t have to wake up one day and decide that you want to have a dream. You are born with that desire, but probably you have not set your mind in the right condition to realize the dream.

Dreams are anything we think that we can achieve. They should be the desires that push us out of the bed every morning. They should be the reasons why we sleep ate. They should be the reason why we spend our money; because they are the reason why we live. Dreams are nothing short of our lives. In fact, were it not that medical practitioners would sue me, I would define dreams as the reason our hearts never stop beating until we die. Or else, we would day that without a dream, all of us could be dead. A dream is an achievable aspiration. It can be acquired any time whether young or old, you can reach your dream. You can rise beyond the odds, but the dream must be achievable, it must have a timeframe, but you have to do four things; dream it, believe it, plan it, and achieve it.

Everything that is done by a human being in the world conceptual thinking before it was realized. Some man somewhere had to dream it for it to come into existence. Most of the millennial kids believe that the world was created just as perfect, with nice roads, beautiful skyscrapers, and airplanes flying above us. I also cannot think that there was a time when people could not watch the news on their televisions, but yes there was such a time! What changed the whole situation? Some people stepped out of the cold and dark world and dared to dream. They did not allow their minds to ask them the “what if” questions. The inventor of the airplane did not have time to think of a plane making an emergency landing on forest and killing thousands of people. No! He saw a plane flying all the way from John F. Kennedy Airport and making a glorious somewhere in Africa, maybe in Durban South Africa. He lit the flames and said that time was too short to let the dream go.

Many of us here dream of great things, but we never believe in them. A dream needs faith. In the very first place, it seems to be beyond our capability, but it has to be believable. You must be able to say that even when others do not help, but you work hard enough and use the right channels, you can still achieve the dream. Dreams are not superstitions; they have to be real. You have to feel them in your soul as tangibly as you can feel your hand. I am at this juncture forced to think of a young farmer in the village who targets to have a $100 million-a-year farming company yet they presently make $10 a day; that dream is believable. At the same time, I am thinking of a 92-year-old woman who wants to build a $1 Billion business empire while their net wealth is $1 million. Well, that needs a miracle!

Like the adage says, “You get what you plan for,” a dream also needs a plan to fulfill it. You don’t realize the dream by having it and setting down and quoting Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “I Have a Dream!” You will need to sit down regularly, break the whole dream into little workable parts, and work on the delivery of the little pieces. Each part needs its own timeframe. Boy, you will not plan and work forever, you will realize that it is only through hard work that you can achieve your dreams. According to John Hickey, only those who pay the ultimate price of a dream are able to reap the benefits of the dream. It is only after achieving that dream will you realize that the people who ever made great achievements in the world, never reached the positions they currently are by sitting on their sofas and waiting for the next release of the Game of Thrones

Lao-Tzu said that a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step and so is a dream.  Dreams are just realities that we have to sweat out to realize. They are the great things that we all think that we can realize. Perhaps we could learn from Barack Obama the first African-American president whose dreams were almost shattered by his race when he said, “My identity might begin with the fact of my race, but it didn’t, couldn’t end there. At least that’s what I would choose to believe.”  Your dream too does not stop with your current situation; you just have to work and believe that is what a dream is!
