The individual I got to interview with a formal leadership position was a nurse manager in charge of the emergency unit. She gave a good overview of the roles she plays as a health team member. Nurse Manager, as indicated during the interview takes the responsibility of supervising the other members of the nursing team in a clinical setting. Other tasks include overseeing patient care and the development of management and budgetary decisions, coming up with work schedules, coordinating and overseeing meetings, and being involved in administrative decisions on staffing. The nurse manager emphasized that it was their duty to ensure that the workplace environment was safe both for the team and the patients.

Effects of Professionalism to the Performance of a Nurse Manager

The nurse manager indicates that professionalism is the adherence to a set of attitudes and behaviors that are deemed as appropriate for a specific position. The manager offered her insight into the issue of professionalism in nursing where she indicated that nurses are expected to show professionalism through their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors by ensuring a strict adherence of principles and regulations for a successful clinical practice. The nurse manager indicated that she applies the principles of professionalism to ensure that her emergency unit team is offers competent, safe, and ethical care to the patients and also their family.

The nurse manager considers herself as steward and believes she has the capacity to influence meaningful change in the nursing practice in her unit. The manager indicated that she considers her character qualities especially self-discipline and courage. This enables her to use practical reasoning in handling various issues occurring in the department. It takes one to be a great steward to encourage the nurses to apply moral principles when dealing with sensitive issues that the patients have experienced.

Professional Advocacy and Authenticity in Leaders

The nurse manager indicated that leaders occupy positions of influence in their organizations and should use their potential in creating trust among their peers. She indicates the need of inspirational leadership where leaders share common traits and are able to relate with others in getting a common ground. Leaders should therefore exercise professional advocacy and authenticity as this helps increase the level of trust and cooperation. Such leaders are also able to create an environment that can support and challenge the team through exercising power and influence over their colleagues to create a healthy organization.  

Comparing and Contrasting of the Two Interviews

The surgical nurse indicated that it required a lot of collaboration to work as part of the surgery team. On the other the leader I interviewed was a nurse manager in an emergency unit with main roles being in the supervision of the nursing team. From both interviews, it was clear that both played an important role in ensuring the creation of safe and health environments.

The nurse manager defined professionalism as the adherence to a set of attitudes and behavior that are deemed as appropriate for a specific position. In the other hand, the surgical nurse viewed professionalism ensuring the performance of duties with the required skills and accepted competence.

Stewards

Both the nurse manager and the surgical nurse indicated that the leader in their organization could be considered as stewards. Being a leader, the nurse manager indicates that she was required to influence on the meaningful change in the nursing practice. This was a common practice for the leaders in various positions. The surgical nurse also had similar views that the leaders influenced meaningful change in the organization.

Professional advocacy and Authenticity in leaders

Both the nurse manager and the surgical nurse indicated that it was important for the leaders to exercise professional advocacy and authenticity as well as exercise power and influence over the colleagues. However the two differed on how the approach the leaders could use to achieve this. The nurse manager indicated that this trait was common in inspirational leaders while the surgical nurse believed that this was common in leaders with transformational leadership traits.

Conclusion

From the interviews, it became clear to me that health care professionals acting in whatever capacity had a huge role in ensuring the creation of conducive work environment where the patient could receive safe healthcare. It also became clear on the need of healthcare practitioners to carrying out their duties with professionalism and ensure adherence to the set standards.
