Leadership Styles

Leadership is the ability to guide and motivate a group of people to achieve a common goal, having a realistic vision and the ability to share with others (Ngwa, 2012). Leadership styles vary from one organization to the other, the people, environment at which they are and the tasks to be completed.  This paper will conduct an analysis of Steve Jobs’ leadership styles who in 1976 together with Wozniak Ronald and Gerald Wayne founded Apple Inc. Apple Inc. deals in designing, manufacturing, marketing mobile communication devices, media devices, personal computers, and portable digital music players. In operates in America, Europe, Greater China, Japan and the Rest of Asia Pacific. [G1]  (CNN Money, 2017).[G2]

It is stated that there is a very close relationship between El competencies and leadership effectiveness  (Goleman, 2000). Goleman came up with six leadership styles of El-based leadership. He strongly believes that El based leadership affects the climate in an organization positively or negatively. He clearly states that Visionary, [G3] affiliative, Coaching, and Democratic drive organizational climate in a positive direction whereas Pacesetting and Coercive moves organizational climate negatively.

Steve Jobs Behavior and Character in Comparison With mine

An analysis of [G4] Steve Jobs found out that a good leader should be visionary (Goleman, 2000). Being a visionary leader encompasses being empathetic, self-confident and motivating others to change. Steve Jobs possessed these traits.  He had the ability to change himself and those who were around him. The technology that he designed was meant to influence others. He believed in himself and his products. He believed that people wanted technology that helped them to be who they are. Being a leader I am able to create attention by exercising a strong vision and commitment to the accomplishment of our organizational goals. [G5] [G6] [G7]

Steve Jobs had visionary leadership and he always emphasized on the research of the product other than the market research by itself. He once said that customers did not always know what they wanted until they were shown. He believed in the philosophy of leading while others. In one of his speeches, he said that it was innovation [G8] distinguishes between a leader and a follower. (Isaacson, 2011). I always keep on encouraging people to be proactive other than reactive.

Steve was always ready to trigger a change in all the [G9] areas he worked. He once complained that Apple’s Mac operating system was taking too long to boot up. The engineers who were working on the system disagreed with him but he challenged them to find a solution on the said operating system and after weeks of research the same engineer had the machine booting 28 seconds faster. As a leader, I always encourage flexibility and give a room for change where need be.

Steve Jobs was very empathetic.  He said that caring deeply about what customers wanted was much different from continually asking them what they wanted. It required intuition and instinct to have you thinking about the desires of the people before you enquired about their desires. I always have to think about others and what they expect from us.

Another of Steve Jobs[G10]  leadership style was being democratic. According to the says that a d[G11] emocratic leader always encourages teamwork, collaborations and communicates effectively  (Goleman, 2000).  Jobs was an excellent orator who always spoke his mind and gave ideas where need be. He had built very strong teams that shared his vision and always understood fully what exactly Jobs wanted. I am a leader who encourages teamwork for the betterment of our organization.[G12] [G13]

He was a strong believer in face to face communication and as it is quoted in his biography [G14] (Isaacson, 2011).  He said that through face to face communication, people were able to exchange ideas.  He also had the Pixar building designed in a way that it promoted people to meet at a point encouraging more communication. Being a leader I am able to use exceptional communicational skills to others with the main goal of motivating my fellow colleagues. Communicational skills are key in my organization to ensure that information is well understood and to encourage the exchange of ideas.[G15] [G16]

According to Goleman (2000), another leadership style was pacesetting which had a negative effect especially on the standards and rewards, Jobs used these traits to his favor to drive performance and higher standards. He was an achievement-driven person and had clear goals and objectives. He worked towards ensuring that achievement was met. In the year 1980’s, when he was starting designing the Macintosh; he was focused on making the computer very great and was not concerned about profits and costs that were involved. He would tell his team that they shouldn’t be worried about the cost but the ability of the computer and they were not to compromise on anything (Isaacson, 2011)

I am a transformational leader who strives to become [G17] [G18] a change trigger in our organization. I always motivate and challenge my juniors so that they can live up to the organization vision thereby eliciting loyalty from them. I am a great source of inspiration to my colleagues and challenges them to be innovative and creative. I always listen to them and give constructive feedback.  This was also the path that Steve Jobs followed in ensuring that the company vision was carried forward.

Environmental and social climate effects to leadership styles

The decisions one makes as a leader, the agendas established, and how one motivates and inspires employees are keys to managing the organization to go over the environmental or social climate. Utilizing the leadership style necessary to move the employees working towards organization’s goals. Environmental and social climate affects greatly on the employee’s morale. A leader [G19] needs to vary his styles accordingly to move the organization through and prevent these effects taking a toll on the employees. [G20]

Effects of economy on the leadership styles

A good leader has to be dynamic in his[G21]  leadership style to respond effectively to changes in economy whether the company is at the establishment period, growth or even start-up. Being an authoritarian leader does not allow innovations. Changing economic times need a leader being more flexible and accommodative.  He has to be more democratic while allowing members to brainstorm and overcome any change in the economy. They [G22] will also need to keep on motivating everyone to cope up with any change in the economy.[G23] [G24]
