Legalization of Abortion

Abortion refers to the ending of a pregnancy to avert birth of a unwanted baby. The termination of pregnancy has been associated with numerous detrimental impacts on the society that has ignited hot debate about it across the globe. Various countries have set up laws prohibiting abortions while others have litigated for its legalization. According to CDC (2014) statistics about 652,639 abortions have been reported to occur in the USA. Therefore, it is evident that abortion is a very present and persistent occurrence in today’s world. Abortion cannot be wished away or brushed aside as a non-issue in the society. In that case, this paper discusses the reasons for and against the legalization of abortion.

Infringement of Human Rights

Abortion should be illegalized since it violates human rights of the baby. The constitution highlights the fundamental right for every human being to live. Life begins at conception. Though the fetus is dependent on the mother for survival, he or she is a separate individual who has the rights pertaining to a human being. Therefore induced abortions are an infringement of the basic human rights.

Psychological Pain

Abortion should be illegalized because it leads to psychological problems. In numerous states abortion is looked down upon since it regarded as immoral. Girls who procure abortions are afraid to disclose that they terminated a pregnancy for fear that they will be shunned by their friends. Hence, women become withdrawn and cannot share their problems with anyone. The suffering is immense, which leads to psychological problems that if not treated can lead to depression.

Medical Complications

Abortions should not be legalized because there is a high risk of complications that may arise after an abortion is procured such as damage to the womb and part of the pregnancy remaining in the womb after the procedure is done. Infections may arise and lead to further medical procedures to correct the mistakes of the abortion. The physical discomfort alone is painful.  Therefore, medical complications are reason enough why abortion should not be legalized.

Support Abortion Legalization

Right to Choice

Abortion should be legalized because women have a right to deal with their bodies as they please. Banning abortions would be robbing their right of choice. The fetus is part of a woman’s body.  Hence, the victim reserves the right to determine the fate of the child.

Moreover, a woman has a right to put anything in her body and remove it at will. It can be argued that a baby is in a woman’s body.  Therefore, it can be removed at her on prerogative.

Financial Constraint

Abortion should be legalized as it would curb the rate of unwanted pregnancies due to financial problems. Numerous girls get pregnant in their teenage to teenage fathers who have no source of income. They have no way of raising their children seeing as they are barely children themselves. Abortion offers relief to an otherwise tough situation that allows women a second chance at making better decisions in future.

Population Control

Termination of pregnancy should be legalized as a way to curb the ever increasing population of the world. Climate change is a very real predicament which is caused by overpopulation. The world’s resources are not enough to sustain the current population. It is evident with the rising temperatures and the melting polar ice caps. Hence abortions will reduce the population if legalized.

In conclusion, it is safe to say abortion should be illegalized as it causes psychological torture, it is an infringement of the basic human right to live and it causes medical complications.
