Information on the Interviewees
The interviewees in the project are media proprietors who have been in the business for nearly five years. Their stories are some of the most inspiring that I have ever heard considering the passion and a measure of strategies that the two have employed in their businesses. Predominantly, Brian McDonald is an owner of a mainstream radio and television stations. McDonald is a holder of master’s degree in journalism from Colorado State University. Although he has been in the business for four and a half years, there has been a realization of unprecedented success. He had acquired his managerial skills from a media company called Techno whereby he was the assistant managing director.
On the other hand, Desmond Peter owns a print media company known as “The Pointer” which has gained a degree of leadership in Texas. Peter has been in the print media for four years, and he has impressively performed. Primarily, it is because of passion, determination, teamwork, and motivation that McDonald and Peter have been able to efficiently execute duties in their respective businesses. I chose to interview the two because of the inspiring stories behind their successes. It is important to note that media proprietorship is one of the significant business investment that one can make. However, the success stories of the two proprietors denote that there is a need for appropriate business strategies to be embraced by upcoming entrepreneurs. Therefore, the information acquired from the interviews will not only trigger business ideas but also help individuals understand that investing in media platforms is profitable. The stories they offer also depict impeccable patience and perseverance which are some of the fundamental aspects of a successful business.
Understanding Media Proprietorship
The two interviews play a pivotal role in making one have a better understanding of media proprietorship. Ideally, media proprietorship can be described as the ownership of a media platform or any other business-related to the media. According to Desmond Peter, a business cannot be successful without one having an effective plan. Planning is essential because it equips a businessperson with important goals to achieve. The intrapreneurs exhibit that there is a myriad of aspects that one should consider before setting up any form of media. One of the most important strategies is to ensure that the budgetary requirements of the investment are met. At one point, McDonald claimed that he had to undergo massive borrowing from banks to begin his media business. Fundamentally, he said that when one borrows to start expanding a business, it means that they are risking. For this reason, risking is one of the features that revolve around any successful business. Peter also said that companies are for the people who are willing to take risks.
When asked what the two media tycoons do on a daily basis, each one of them was glad to offer a comprehensive overview of their daily routines. McDonald demonstrates that time is a crucial factor and as a result, every day of the week counts. In effect, allocating different tasks to complete every day serves a vital role in strengthening the objectives of the company and ensuring that they are met. Media entails entertainment, news, sports and other sorts of information such as advertisements. The interview presented a measure of information on some of the factors that contribute to the growth of a media business. Notably, an individual must ensure that market research is conducted to ascertain that target audience and the kind of media services that should be directed to them. For instance, McDonald’s radio and television ensures that all audiences can listen or view the stations. As a result, he provides that he has a strong marketing team which analyzes to show what the audience wants to hear or watch.
Both Newspapers and mainstream radio and television and radio make earnings majorly from the sale of advertisements. Chiefly, McDonald reiterated that some of the establishments that pay substantial amounts of money to be advertised include alcohol brands, refreshments, cars, and other company services such as mobile phones network providers. Peter also understands the essence of advertisements in the media business, and for that reason, the editors create sufficient spaces for them. Radio is one of the most convenient and widely used forms of communication not only in the United States but also across the world. Nevertheless, McDonald mentions that with the introduction of smartphones, computers, and other smart gadgets such as smart televisions, people can now find information within a few clicks on their search engines.
Media proprietorship, according to McDonald and Peter, requires a measure of relevant skills and talent. Ideally, one of the most common profession in any proprietorship is the ability for one to lead others. As a leader, Peter ensures that there is a rapport in the workstation and that every employee is comfortable. Such a kind of affinity does not only foster development within the company but also motivates the workers and the managing staff. One of the challenges linked to media is that there is stiff competition which has led to the emergence of many media companies. However, both the proprietors agree that although there is a high competition among media platforms, one’s strategy is the one that makes some businesses more successful than others.
The media tycoons added that they enjoy their jobs because they loved media from the time they were in school. McDonald believes that he is a talent while Peter thinks that he has a special; gift in journalism especially print journalism. He talked about his experience while in school whereby he played a significant role in helping create the school newspaper, which he claims is still in his former school. According to McDonald, most people with media companies are usually talented in journalism. People who have expertise in the media have fewer challenges in handling tasks that require their attention. Media, like any other area of profession, demands entrepreneurs to foster teamwork in their respective companies. The two interviewees agreed that teamwork is a positive influencer in any workstation and for that reason, there is a need for company managers to strategize on ideas that can promote cooperation in their companies.
As media investment experts, McDonald and Peter encourage students to embrace journalism and media studies if at all they are anticipating having such businesses. They insist that media proprietorship is a challenging environment, especially during the first year. One needs to study the target audience precisely to avoid inconveniences. Besides, they encouraged those students who are looking forward to owning media businesses to have a Master’s Degree as an added advantage and also enroll in a business class. When asked whether they can recommend the course for others, the two interviewees claimed that it is one of the best courses when one has talent or passion in it. They reiterated that those willing to become entrepreneurs have to be willing to take risks and invest in something that can be promising.
Through the interview, I was equipped with sufficient information on the way one can become successful in business all because of the business plans that are laid. Notably, an effective business plan is the one that consists of everything that is necessary for the company. Creating a business plan requires time and sufficient information to meet the demands of an effective strategy. The location of the of a business is another critical aspect to consider in any industry. For instance, companies that are situated near significant towns and cities benefit for because such locations have many people, especially the rich ones who may be willing to conduct business with a company.
Overall, the information got from the two businesspersons is focal because it enlightens people willing to invest in media companies. McDonald and Peter are some of the entrepreneurs that have become successful in the media because of their hardworking, patience and perseverance. They understand that for one to earn from a business, there is a need for flawless dedication and consistent ideas that can help boost the industry. Broadly, the interviewees helped me have a better understanding of the media and what it entails. Students pursuing journalism and media studies should aim at undertaking a business course such as management to have sufficient knowledge of running mega businesses such as the ones that Peter and McDonald have.
