The PICO question for this review assignment is: Among the newly diagnosed patients who are discharged from acute care with type 2 diabetes, does enhanced nursing practice with teaching the information, educating patients regarding nutrition and exercise helps the patient. Moreover, medication and insulin therapy with regular check up to control the diabetes yields better result compared to patients with no health literacy and not ensuing the suggested practices to regulate diabetes.

While discussing the effectiveness of diabetes related education, the research of the Nazar et al., (2015) conducted in the context of United Kingdom should be mentioned. The researchers conducted research to understand the prevalence of diabetes type 2 according to age and gender in UK and found that within the 90% population who are affected with diabetes type 2, are more than 60 years of age. The researchers found that within the sample size of 575 students, more than 31% patients had poor knowledge regarding the diabetes and 72% had negative thoughts regarding their disease condition. It determined the less effective awareness in the society regarding diabetes as people were not aware regarding their diet, attitude and preventable measures regarding the diabetes (Al-Maskari et al., 2013). Further in this study, it was also observed, people who had positive attitude and were aware regarding the facts of diabetes, was able to control it without any major issue.

The states spent more than $245 billion dollar in the year 2012, and it is estimated to grow up to 500 billion by the end of 2020 (Zheng, He & Congdon, 2012). The higher number of unaware diabetic patients are the primary reason for the increasing diabetic severity in the states. Hence, to create a health awareness in the society, those diabetic patient should be provided with education and awareness regarding diabetes. So that the literacy level of the people can be increased (Guariguata et al., 2014).

Conclusion

This assignment dealt with comparison of health literacy and illiteracy and effect of those on people with diabetes type 2. For this purpose several research articles were reviewed to understand the effectiveness of education in patients and it was found that education related to diabetes helped them to control the diabetes and maintain a positive view regarding their disease. Further the financial implication also reported that financially health illiteracy harms a complete nation as maximum of the finance is involved in healthcare treatment.
