It is easy to judge a situation from the outside looking in. Jerome Doggman has an opinion about religion. He is looking into a specific sect for his next project. Jerome is a semi famous Arizona filmmaker. He is working to expose the practises of a particular fundamentalist religious group. As luck, or lack thereof, would have it. He gets too close to something he should not. So he is murdered. You would think this is the end of it but alas! It is actually the beginning of things.
The subject of Jerome’s expose would have been a teenage boy, Abraham, who has been in a coma for eight years. Abraham has a sister, Florence. So when Jerome dies, he reincarnates in the boy of dear Abraham. As if that is not strange/complicated enough. He has the hots for Florence. The journey for Jerome is a long and enlightening one. While he is learning he also has to contend with the fact that his previous killers want to kill him, again.
Note the thoughts that go through Jerome’s mind as he is dying. Sure he is enveloped in a strange sense of calmness that you would not expect. But, he is also thinking a lot about his Dwarf Planet. Does not sound like the endearing nickname for a wife, does it? This just drives home the importance of family and loved ones. As he is dying he barely thinks about his expose. He does not think about material stuff.
Michael Greco puts together a hilarious tale of life through the eyes of different people. This book is very beautifully written. There are no weird uncomfortable gaps in the story. It simply just flows smoothly. Almost like the characters and story took on a life of its own without control from the author. It is exquisite. The sentence construction is very proper and easily consumable. For such a wild plot, it is pretty easy to wade through the muck. To find the lessons in the story.
One of the biggest takeaways from this story is the importance of putting oneself in the other’s shoes. Jerome would have remained judgemental of Abraham’s sect for life. He got to live the life. He got to understand the workings. Another beautiful thing is the realisation at the end of what the true purpose of the reincarnation had been. It was never about uncovering truths and secrets. Not to mention the happy, maybe a little sad, ending. It is nice to see the characters wrap up so nicely.
This book carries some very complex concepts. The author weaves in some old folk tales into the narrative. This may confuse the reader. As the story progresses, it becomes a little harder to keep up with the narrative. All in all, it is a book worth taking time for. It is thought provoking and engaging. Well worthy of four stars out of five.
