My Sister’s Keeper

My Sister’s keeper by Jodi Picoult is a novel that revolves around a family. Anna, who is a perfect match for her sister sues the family to have a right to make her own health decisions. At 13 years, she is tired of having to donate blood, bone marrow, and as she is required to do presently, kidney. The story covers the events of the trial as it unfolds. Every chapter is written with a perspective of a different family member.

The novel mostly revolves around the themes of the family system, human rights and the legal system. The novel is also full of symbols and other figures of speech that make iy more appealing to the readers. The presentation of the book in a variety of perspectives shows the conflict that exists within the family. As the novel comes to a close though, we note a form of cohesiveness within the family.

Regarding the decision to sue the parents, we learn that her decision had been contributed by Kate who felt that she was going to die anyway and her sister did not have to donate a kidney to her. At the same time, we learn about a relationship that had existed between Julia and Alexander both of who are trying to seek Justice for Anna. While Julia had not known, Alexander had withdrawn from the relationship after discovering that he had epilepsy and felt that Julia deserves better.

The novel plays a nice game at dealing with the emotional and legal issues surrounding transplants and the general health systems. While it is an emerging issue, it is better to deal with it in fiction to in preparation of the real issues.
