Narcos, Season 1 Episodes 6 and 7

Crime has been represented as a deadly game that sweeps with impunity. I episode 6, we can see Escobar with a ledger that he uses to record anytime a police officer is killed by his subordinates. Every police head is worth a million. So far, more than 200 police officers have been fallen. Crime in this sense, is represented as a means of expressing vengeance from Escobar as well as a means of showing allegiance on the part of the executors of the crimes on behalf of Escobar. When Escobar’s son tells Escobar that he would like to be like his father career wise, we see innocence of a child and the guilt of a father. The son is expressing his anger after his sister annoys him. To him, crime is the ultimate means of solving any problem. Gacha’s son (Gacha is a gang leader) is already well into the course. Crime is unremorseful with long term effects. Escobar is seen exchanging pleasantries with a family with which he intends to rob the breadwinner through death. He senselessly makes children orphans as well as wives widows. The trait is openly shown when flight Avianca is bombed killing all people on board. Law enforcers on their part see crime as a powerful force that is sloppy and slippery. Crime influences the presidential choice for Colombians and it also shapes the agenda of the government.

The boundaries between the criminal, the authority, and the victims are in most cases clear in these two scenes. Crime has its own motivation and it sets the pace adopted by the authority and the victim. It is clear that Escobar is the criminal and also the authority on one side of the law. The Search Bloc is also an authority on the other side of the law and it forces the reactions of the authority on the other side (Escobar).  Victims are people who cross the path of the criminals and they also include the police who are also an authority. Victims come in all shapes and sizes and includes the innocent, the guilty, and those who are working to ensure that the criminals are eliminated but end up being eliminated themselves. The public is the ultimate receiving end of the whole debacle making it the biggest victim.

The point of view of the story is that of the third person. The narrator of the story is not in the story in most times. Sometimes, the story is told in the first person. The third person point of view allows there to be precise separation of the criminal, the authority, and the victims.

In the episodes, the state institution mostly presented is the police service. It is tasked with the role of maintaining law and order. Episode 6 begins with the police with a mounted roadblock and conducting checks on every car. The role of police seems to threat the endeavors of Pablo who offers reward for any police killed.

Effects of globalization are evident in the two episode. It is revealed that Pablo hired the services of a foreign bomb-maker to take down the plane that carried Gaviria who was a candidate for the position of president of Colombia. The United States had availed its resources including staff from DEA and CIA to help in efforts of curbing drug trade in Colombia as well as bringing down Pablos cartel.

One of the most dramatic scenes in the episode 7 was the bombing of the plane that had targeted the presidential candidate. This plan backfires against Pablo and instead of killing his target, it offers him a boost in his quest of winning the presidency. With Gaviria as the President of Colombia, it turns the tables as he vows to increase his chase for Escobar and fight his extradition. This new position to Gaviria sees him reject assistance from USA. He further refuses to hear any Escobar’s request or fear his numerous intimidations. Is Gaviria, the new President of Colombia, in position to bring to an end the reign of Pablo and his drug trade?
