New Mexico State History
Technology in New Mexico Portfolio Directions
Directions
Research New Mexican technological innovations to develop either a poster or essay
describing some of them. Be sure to include information about how these innovations
influence(d) the state’s economy.
• Use reliable sources, including the graphic organizer that you completed as part
of your lesson instruction, to find information about technological innovations in
New Mexico. Be sure to locate and collect details about at least three
innovations. You may wish to consider the following questions as you conduct
research:
• When was this innovation made?
• What did the innovation do? How did it change how people lived or
worked?
• What were some of the positive and/or negative effects of this
innovation?
• How might this innovation have had an impact on the national or state
economy?
• Create a properly formatted bibliography to show each source that you used as
part of your research. Review the information on the next page to learn how to
format and cite sources in a bibliography correctly.
• Write a rough draft of your essay or sketch out your poster in your notebook. If
you write an essay, be sure to create an outline that gives information about each
innovation you want to include. If you create a poster, identify photos or
illustrations that you want to add to your display.
• Create an essay or poster using your plan. Either format should give facts and
details about at least three innovations and explain how these innovations
connect to the economy.

Bibliography Formatting
Directions
Use the following information to cite sources from your research properly.
Examples of Proper Format
Book
List the author and title of the book. (The title should be in italics.) Then list the city
where the book was published, the publisher, the year the book was published, and
the medium of publication. This information is usually listed on the first page after the
title page inside the book (the copyright page). Your Learning Coach can help you locate
the information.
EXAMPLE
Brown, Jennifer. The Great Depression. Philadelphia, PA: Schoolhouse
Learning Inc., 2007. Print.
Article from a Magazine or Newspaper
List the author and title of the article. The article title should be in quotation marks.
Then list the name of the magazine or newspaper and the date the issue was
published. (The name of the magazine or newspaper should be in italics.) Then list the
page numbers for the article and the medium of publication.
EXAMPLES
Magazine
Ramirez, Jorge. “Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal.” History for Kids July 2008:
20–25. Print.
Newspaper
Winters, Bob. “Stock Market Crash Devastates Nation.” Pleasantville Times
29 Oct. 1929: A1. Print.
Website
Listing information about websites in your bibliography can be a little trickier than listing
information for other kinds of sources. That is because there are many different types of
sites, and they do not always follow the same format.
Keep in mind that the purpose of a bibliography is to show where you found
information and help a reader locate the information easily. When you list a website in
your bibliography, include as many of the following details as you can:
• for articles on a website, the title and author of the article, if available
• the name of the website
• the organization that maintains the website
• the date you went to the site and got the information
• the URL, or address, of the website
