Opinion paper on government of USA
1. Responsibility of the government
According to Van Ryzin (2013), the government of the day ought to protect rights and freedom of its citizens as they ensure fairness and social justice. Ideally, it is the government’s full responsibility to protect people’s rights and freedom. Knudsen,( 2009) argued that governing nature of many governments, the day’s government ought to also develop better systems of protecting its citizen by enacting people based values like the rule of law, justice and equal opportunity without sidelining through the race, religion or political affiliations. It is also fundamental for the government to manage the economy in matters pertaining collection of taxes so as to ensure its people get better utilities and better life standard thus gradually helping to improve the economy.
2. How to choose a leader
Palumbo argued that (2009) based one person, one vote; modern democracy should choose a leader through election by the citizens thus winning by majority vote. The leader gets elected by popular vote instead of the Electoral College electing a new person who may not even be the one who won the majority vote. The Electoral College’s structure will allocate each state’s electoral votes according to its number of members of Congress, meaning that voters in smaller states get far more electors per capita than voters in big states. Sollenberger (2008) demonstrated that the one man, one vote democracy is to give the winner the majority vote and thus receive plurality of the ballot and not by an outright majority. The voters will rank candidates, and then select the winner who will beat all others in the rankings basis. By doing so, the voters under the system will be provided with enough information about who they want in government.
3. Who will get more power? States or Federal?
Mulcahy (2003), illustrated that the States government should have more power because the needs of each citizen of the states will be more easily managed. State control will empower states to make tough critical decisions for their well-being instead of the federal government looking at the states’ problem or agendas as a priority. A strong state government does also empower citizens in two ways. First, state governments are better placed to be more responsive to the needs of the residents of their state. Thus ensuring that if important issues are not addressed, then voters will hold elections and vote for people they believe that are well suited to sort out their state problems. The Government phone book the USA: a comprehensive guide to federal, state, county, and local government offices in the United States ( 2002), showed that the citizens would not depend on the federal government to settle an individual state issue. Each state government has authority over that issue, and then they will influence change they seek. Second, empowered state governments do allow people to vote in place the state that best fit their personal values. Citizens will be able to choose states which get no or low-income taxes or states with higher income taxes.
