Pasadena City College Heat Capacity of A Substance Responses

First Discussion:

Heat capacity is the ratio of a materials heat absorption to temperature change. The heat capacity of a substance or metal refers to how well it can absorb and release heat. An example of heat capacity in my daily life would be when I boil water to make tea. When I heat up a pot of water on the stove, the pot heats up faster than the water contents. There is the same amount of heat on both substances but the teapot starts heating up faster, especially since the pot is metal. Teapots and other materials used in cooking have a small heat capacity which means even when small amount of heat is applied it tends to get heated up much quicker.

SEcond discussion

Hello class! For this weeks discussion post, we are being required to describe the concept of specific heat capacity and its effects on temperature changes. The concept of specific heat capacity is basically the amount of energy that is being used to raise the temperature of a substance. Certain effects on temperature change can be that the process of this transfer of heat change which is what causes heat to be increased or decreased which causes it to cool down. One example of a specific heat capacity that I see in my every day life is especially lately is using the air conditioning in the car. Having the air conditioning on less heat is what allows me to cool down and having the temperature at a higher heat Is what causes a rise in temperature which causes a heat increase. I selected this example because it seems to have been the most common thing that contains specific heat capacity as well as cooking on a stove. It is easier to example an example especially when it is apart of your every day life which is why I chose this example.
