Personal Statement – Accounting Major

I grew up loving money and the numbers of money. My mother would me give me
tasks if well done were rewarded financially. Making money was embedded straight from home
but spending it was uncontrolled. With time, I could no longer ask for small things like toys
without accounting for my expenditure of what I earned. The sense of accountability drove
home. Now I started keeping a track of the money I earned. Budgeting and accounting for it. I
later would learn there is a name for that professionally, Accounting. In accounting one thinks of
ways to make money, substitute deficiencies, predict the future, and ensure the expenditure has
value.
Today, I’m determined to pursue a major in Accounting, to preserve and advance what
my mother passed down to me. This way I will have expert skills in fundamental concepts,
transaction analysis, preparation of financial statements, depreciation and others. The concept of
business ownership and ratio analysis is another part I will gain knowledge in. My father owns a
business in Taiwan where I was born and a thriving industry in China. Many times during my
free time I get the chance to assist him in Taiwan. I have never assisted in the China industry, but
I intend to after my studies. It is bigger compared to the Taiwan business, and it would not be

wise to try an untrained person in it. Helping in Taiwan gives me firsthand experience in the
diverse world of business and most specifically money, and accounting.
I handle my father’s financial records, accounting for sales and balancing between sales
and expenditures, budget and others. My father has a personal and experienced accountant who
files his tax returns, and I get to talk to him once in a while. Through this, he has helped me to
get the concept of taxation. I get to see the legal documents required to run and operate a
business hence advancing my knowledge in the legal aspect of being in business. He in many
times told me that he wants me to assist him full time as his son and employee. Though he made
it clear, the assistance would be more helpful if it is professional. This way I’m motivated to
study more on the field I feel I am talented, and that is accounting. The good thing about
accounting is that one can become almost anything. There are jobs readily available in
government and the private sector. In case it does not work out in my family business, I have
confidence there are jobs. One can work in forensic departments, budget analyzing, taxation,
financial accounting and many others. Still one may decide to join the education sector as an
instructor or lecturer for accounting courses.
To get more information on my choice of study, I find myself reading websites, books,
journals, magazines and articles related to this particular field. I have interacted with the
Economist, Forbes Magazine, Business Week, Big 4, Accounting Made Simple by Mike Piper
and others. I also have a keen following for big accounting companies like Deloitte & Touché,
Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers and others. The reading and following have improved
my observance and analytical skills. I now I’m keen to small and fundamental details like before.
My perception of the global environment of business and accounting is widened. I am fully
inspired to one day have my accounting firm mentioned and used as a standard measure by these

top entities. One of the ways to get there is to ensure that my performance in Accounting is
excellent. In my father’s business, I get to improve my skill in handling pressure, working with
numbers, organization and bookkeeping. These are important aspects in the world of accounting.
Given a chance, I would like to work for Deloitte & Touche before joining self-employment in
my company. I have a lot of admiration for the company and the popularity it enjoys.
Association with it will be success, and I will have a real picture of what I would want my future
company to be like.
In my high school days, I was a member of many social groups. To some, I was an
official and to others a dedicated member. In these groups, I have learned how to interact with
different people from different places. I have advanced my communication and inter-personal
skills. My ability to multi-task has improved a lot from the experience I gained in managing the
many duties assigned to me. The most remarkable moment came when I was delegated to lead
the rest in organizing a fundraising to get funds for group activities. I managed to lead others in
setting up the initiative and seeing it accomplished successfully. My creativity skills came handy,
and I also learned so much about leading a team and being a team player. It was challenging but
working with dedicated people made it easier. There were small issues that needed a little bit
more experience and expertise, and we consulted other people. Today the initiative has been
replicated by many other groups. The actual event of raising the funds, tallying, accounting,
planning expenditure and implementation inspired me more to study accounting.
When I turned 20 years old, I started to think about my ambitions and goals in life. I
looked into the viability, process and the cost of achieving them. I consulted my best friend who
happens to be the first Chinese friend I met in college and planned something together. We
decided that should start a joint company as soon as possible. Our main business focus and

product are the internet and technology. We plan to invest in technology applications
development and handling of massive data technology. Our biggest dream is to grow and get an
IPO on NASDAQ. Discussing this and planning it renewed my energy and inspiration to want to
be a professional business person. The expertise I will gain in studying accounting will be very
valuation to seeing this dream come true to us.
