Physical Activity Resource Guide

The resource guide will be useful in supplying information on tools and resources that focus on enhancing health behavior among the peer group. The resources in this guide will include websites, toolkits, programs, curricula that address physical activity. Unlike the old days, more youths are becoming obese and overweight. This is due to the change of eating habits, lifestyle, lack of physical exercise, busy lives and other factors. Due to this, the peer group has joined hand in engaging in various physical activities.

The group will follow some few steps to stay motivated. Every group member will have to know the benefits of physical exercise as it will increase their motivation. Each member will be required to create a personal “reasons list” for losing weight or getting fit or getting healthy. The exercising time will be set according to the type of activity the group is engaging on. In some of the activities, there will be rewards that individuals should set for themselves. Lastly, the group will ensure that each activity remains enjoyable as much as possible.

Sharks and Minnows

The exercise will take approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour. The game starts with three members acting as sharks while the rest of the group acts as minnows. According to the game, the three sharks start at the middle while the minnows start on one side of the grid each holding a ball. According to “Games Library” (2017), a coach gives a go ahead, where each minnow runs across the water holding his or her ball. He/she should ensure that a shark does not snatch the ball away from him/her. For a minnow to be safe from the shark, he/she should run to the opposite borderline while avoiding a tag from the shark. When a shark tags a minnow, he/she automatically becomes a shark. The game continues until only two or three minnows remain where they become sharks on the following round.

The exercise will engage the group in vigorous activity. This is a good way to keep fit, lose weight or live healthily. Each group member will be actively engaged. The exercise will be outdoor on a neighborhood playground. The exercise requires no tools to perform. Therefore the cost of the exercise will be zero thus convenient for every individual.

Corners

The activity will require a four cornered room. The most appropriate place for this activity is the social hall in the area. Alternatively, designated areas may be created using cones in a field. Purdue.edu (2017) explains that the exercise starts with splitting the group equally into four subgroups where each group stands on one corner. One member is selected and stands at the center of the area. The member at the center closes his/her eyes and counts from 0 to 10 while the other members run to different corners as the counting continues.

At getting to 0 counts, all the members stands at the corners, the middle member while still closing his eyes points at one corner. All members standing at the selected corner play a selected exercise where all members count slowly to 5. In case there is no member at the chosen corner, the member in the middle starts over. Some of the exercises that the group chose to engage on include jumping jacks, sit-ups, push-ups, big arm circles, roll your hips, March, bunny hop, jumping high, or hopping on one foot.

Amoeba Tag

This exercise requires no materials. The exercise starts by making one member the IT. The selected member tags as many members as he/she can. The tagged individuals together with the IT person hold hands. These individuals work together in tagging everybody else forming a chain. When the chain becomes significant, the members split to smaller chains. This activity will keep the group engaged and active.

Freeze Dance

The equipment required is a radio, CD or tape player. The materials may be purchased or hired according to the agreement with members. In case the equipment is purchased, the buying cost will be shared equally among the members. An open area will be designated for the exercise, which should be free from obstacles. The radio or the CD/tape player should have a readily selected music selection. The members will dance as music plays.

Each member should immediately freeze after the music pause, holding the position until the music begins again. If one member fails to freeze after the pause of the music, he/she engages in another activity like balance challenge, push-ups or 10 jumping jacks before the start of the next dance. The member, however, returns to the dance because as an aerobic exercise, all members should be engaged from the start to the end. The exercise will actively engage all members and will assist in achieving their personal goals.

Sports Club

The exercise requires each member to have space. Therefore, it is most suitable for an outdoor field and requires no equipment. Different games should be reviewed with the members and a freeze sign selected. Some of the games to include are tennis, volleyball, gymnastics, hula hooping, boxing, running, four square, jumping rope, football, and basketball. The game starts with a selected member calling out a game and modeling the action. The other members are required to play the game through acting it out. In the middle of acting, a freezing action is given, and the member who fails to freeze walks aside and the game continues.

Flag Football Agility Course

The equipment required includes 3-8 flags, 3-8 footballs, and cones to set boundaries. The play area should be designated using cones approximately six members should stand on the inside while the other members line up with flags hanging in their pocket.

The persons with a flag should have a ball on their hand. They should run to the other side protecting their ball and flag. If they lose any of the two, they are set in the middle. Every individual remains active as there are no outs.
