Portuguese in the United States

Consider the Cape Verdean sociolinguistic situation in which Creole is the language spoken at home and in all informal communication, while Portuguese is the language used by government agencies, the school, and a communication media. What is your prediction about the likelihood of Portuguese maintenance among Cape Verdean communities in the USA, where English is the Public language?

Maintaining Portuguese in the United States is going to be difficult because it is not widely spoken. This is because in Cape Verde, the language spoken is Creole. In doing unofficial business, Portuguese is less favoured. In the United States, the Cape Verdeans are less likely to use Portuguese when they have to conduct their official business in English. At the end of the day, Portuguese in the United States will be represented by Creole and eventually, the official Portuguese language will fizzle out of use. The maintenance will be difficult if not impossible especially if the first generation Portuguese do not speak Portuguese and instead maintain speaking Creole even in the United States.
