There are many processes that can be employed for controlling the risk. However, the major factor that is considered in risk management is the human factor. The risk attitudes of organizations as well as stakeholders are impacted by several factors. These include the risk appetite, tolerance, and threshold. The risk appetite refers to the extent to which the organizations and stakeholders are willing to assume the risk. The tolerance factor identifies the amount to which the organizations can withstand the risk. The threshold aspect indicates the capacity of the organizations to take the risk in anticipation of a specific reward. The risk attitudes of organizations and stakeholders are also impacted by their biases and perceptions.
A significant risk in the context of human factor is overestimating the ability and potential to deliver a project. It results in undertaking ambitious tasks and overcommitting the work. Another problem that organizations often face in risk management is assigning the responsibilities of strategy development and risk management to the same functional units. These two domains require different personalities and should never be handled by the same team of individuals. Communications regarding risk should be customized based on the stakeholder audience. The concerns and risk perceptions vary from stakeholder to stakeholder. The risk management should categorize the risks based on their severity and likelihood. The available trade-offs should be evaluated and risk mitigation strategies should be developed. Project team members should also have the idea of how a particular risk will affect their tasks, how the risks are being prioritized, and how they will be mitigated.
