PSY1100 General Psychology : Solution Essays

Question:

Critical Thinking Exercise:

Scientific research is a way of gaining knowledge through applying principles of critical thinking to real-world questions.

Critical thinking requires that we be able to:

  • Accurately define a problem or issue of concern
  • Evaluate assumptions, biases, or perspectives held by oneself or by others
  • Assess the quality and logic of arguments and evidence presented in support of information
  • Formulate valid implications and conclusions about the problem or issue of concern

This exercise will demonstrate how to think critically about a set of claims that have been around for a very long time, but recently came to the attention of the general public through a book and movie by the name of “The Secret”.

Answer:

  1. Watch this video on “The Law of Attraction”  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qI4oOTW3gpI
  2. Write the answers to the following questions after viewing the video:
  3. Summarize the claims being made in the video about the Law of Attraction.

some of the claims being made in the video about the law of attraction are the following; one can attract whatever he or she wants because we all have the ability to put into practice whatever we want to happen to us. We are the master mind of the decisions we make about what we want to do. Another claim is that the formula for success in life is the moment we decide to notice more of what we want. The next claim is that we can never miss something to be grateful for in life and we should work hard towards finding it. The first thing that a person should give priority to is one’s happiness and the rest shall follow. We should not hold on anything that only brings frustrations and sadness to us because the moment we let go, there is freedom that comes with it. We should not only major on the negative issues instead we should always look for the positive things in life so that we benefit (the law of attraction video).

  1. Identify one strongargument from the video for the Law of Attraction; in other words, describe one argument provided in the video that was convincing.

One argument provided in the video that was convincing is that whatever we feel and think in our minds always will result to whatever will get attracted to our lives. So we should so careful with our thoughts because they will determine a lot whatever gets attracted to our lives (the law of attraction video).

  1. Identify one weakargument from the video for the Law of Attraction; in other words, describe one argument from the video that made you doubt the Law of Attraction is true.

One argument in the video that made me doubt the video is true is that the law of attraction only works when I think positively and not negatively. I doubt this argument because in life there is nothing in life that has no positive and negative side. Before we make our decisions about something, we should be aware of the positive as well as the negative to be able to weigh if it will be of benefit or not. So for me this is a weak argument.

  1. On a scale of 0% to 100%, state what number represents how much you personally believe in the Law of Attraction and thoroughly explainyour reasons for your belief or disbelief (100 is completely certain it’s true, and 0 is completely certain it’s false).

According to my belief in the law of attraction, I don’t believe that much and I don’t deny much about it as well. So I choose 50 t0 be my number. I chose 50% because it explains my divided attention towards the law of attraction and all about it.

  1. 3. After answering the previous questions, watch this video from the Street Epistemologist as he talks with 2 men, one of whom believes in the Law of Attraction (Colton), and one who does not (Kenneth).   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXnTA9irjo0&t=66s&frags=pl%2Cwn
  2. Write your answers to the following questions after viewing the video
  3. a. Summarize the reasons Colton gave for his belief in the Law of Attraction

The three reasons that gave for his belief in the law of attraction are the following; he believes that for one to be able to achieve their dreams, they must ask, believe and receive. He says he tried that and he is able to testify that it is true.

  1. Explain whether Colton’s belief was based on sound logic or personal opinion.

His believe was based on sound logic that exists in the law of attraction. In addition is based on his personal opinion because he had practiced what the law of attraction says and he came out with a positive feedback.

  1. How did the street epistemologist get Colton to think about/question his belief in the Law of Attraction?

He got Colton to question his belief in the law of attraction by pointing to him the weak argument that raises many doubts about the law of attraction.

  1. If you gave your belief in the Law of Attraction a 50% or better rating in question 2d, describe one personal experience or situation that would change your mind to 0% belief.

OR, if you gave your belief in the Law of Attraction a 49% or lower rating in question 2d, describe one personal experience or situation that would change your mind to 100% belief.

I gave my belief in the law of attraction 50% and the situation that would make me change my mind to 0% is when someone who thinks negatively about something uses the same thing to become successful in life. For example when someone had a dream of being a lawyer that he or she keeps thinking negatively about and in the end the person achieves his dreams by becoming a lawyer. The reason as to why I would change my belief to 0% is because the law of attraction tells us that we should think positive in order to find what we want (Robbins & Francis, 2009).

  1. After answering all the previous questions, on a scale of 0% to 100%, state how confident you are that the Law of Attraction is true and then describe your current personal conclusionsabout the Law of Attraction.  Describe your thought processes, and especially discuss whether your belief/disbelief in the Law of Attraction has changed in any way as a result of watching the Street Epistemologist video.

I am 50% confident about the law of reaction. One is because of the true argument that it displays and one is because of the weak argument that it displays. My belief in the law of attraction has not changed in any way even after watching the epistemologist video. What the law of attraction says is true and helpful. The real and honest fact about the law of attraction is that when we want to achieve our dreams then we must ask, believe and in the long run receive (Haack, 2012).

  1. Describe a different personal belief(not related to the Law of Attraction) that you could reconsider based on what you have learned from this exercise in critical thinking.  Remember that beliefs can be made stronger OR weaker as a result of critical thinking.

My personal belief is everyone who really dies to be successful in life will actually achieve it when he or she keeps working towards the goals without giving up and the only difference between other successful people and him is time.
