Resume Writing While Avoiding Hilarious Typos
As Melissa Forman explains in her video about resume typos, one letter can change the whole meaning of a phrase or a statement. Over the years I have learnt that I don’t just need to write a good resume but I always write a great resume. A good resume obsesses with tactical elements while a great resume lays its focus on strategy. By experience I have learnt that, although it is imperative to demonstrate my academic credential and experience, I should not generate a chronological “dump-yard” that details the job for the purpose of giving a career history. But every statement I write in my resume always has its foundation based on a well-thought strategy.
After graduating, I embarked on job hunting moving from one organization to the next. It’s during this time I learnt about applying the 80-20 principle in my resume. 80% of my resume highlighted my accomplishments in relation to the field while 20% was my duties. I described ways and instances I solved problems previously and this opened doors for more interviews and I landed to a junior supervisor position.

Dustin I really liked your cunning way of getting a transfer to the Wal-Mart distribution center. That was a brilliant idea that you used to achieve your dream job then. The idea of selling yourself to your employer is relevant and should be every person’s desire while seeking employment. As you stated, after sending an application, a person should make follow ups to ensure he/she is always on the employer’s mind like using of thank you letters. Do you agree with the idea that a good resume describes an experience while the great resume shares a story?

I like your idea of searching for materials on the do’s and don’ts of resumes, reading body language and interview process. This I presume was one of the best strategies you took while searching for employments. The writing of resume should always be subjective. Using the key elements of making a good vita- professional formatting, solid work history, impeccable grammar, zero spelling errors, gripping action verbs, strong writing- are absolute essentials but none can help in securing a job. However if a resume is more on accomplishments rather than duties, it places in better positions of acquiring a job opportunity. What strategies can you use to make sure your potential employers are on your mind?
