Society’s assumption that religion and science can’t co-exist has been one of the things that has lead to endless debates. For the longest time, humans have predominantly subscribed to the notion that one can’t be a firm believer of both. The presumption is that you either wholly follow science or get drowned in religion and spirituality. James G. Martin is here to tell us to discard that myth. It is very possible for one to be a follower of both. There are things in religion that conflict with science. This does not mean that there is no truth in either. I loved reading this book because it helped me form informed opinions about both religion, and science.
There is a question I loved in the introduction part. “Must science be an impediment to faith . . . and if so, whose faith?” One doesn’t often get clear answers with such questions. The amazing thing with this book is that as complex as the question may seem, the reader was able to get clear answers. This is of course with a lengthy explanation and discussion about God, the universe and the role of science. To sum it up, the author at the end of it listed the things he believed about God, and the things he believed in science. Both made sense and one could get a clear understanding of why the author said so.
“Revelation Through Science” is divided into four parts. Each part talks about the main topics; religion and science but focuses on other minor-topics. One of my favorite parts in the book was when the author discussed the evolution of dissent with moderation. The author gave an in-depth analysis of the theory that is evolution, nature, atheism and the explanation of God’s supreme being. The other part I loved reading about was the relationship between politics and science. The author discussed the first amendment, bipartisan politics, criticism in politics, errors both Republicans and Democrats make and the Saccharin Saga.
Reading this book is not only eye-opening but also makes one think deeply about the universe and what we believe in. It is fair to say that there are errors in both science and religion. The perfect way of looking at it is that one needs a little of both to survive. The author’s use of historical icons made the book great. When discussing certain topics, he used appropriate examples to bring the point home. I loved that he talked about Darwin’s theory and stated why some people believe in the theory. The story of Galileo Galilei was a good addition. The telescope, retrograde motion of planets and the Galileo affair made interesting reads.
This book is nothing short of informing. The reader is taken through historical events and given logical explanations on why thing happen the way they happen. James G. Martin is obviously an expert in these topics and knows how to make even the youngest understand such complex matters. “Revelation Through Science” is a good read. I rate it with 5 out of 5 stars.
