Procedure
 Boil distilled water to ensure the removal of CO2
CO2(g) + H2O  H2CO3(g)
 Using the boiled water, prepare the following
solutions:
500 mL of 0.1 M HCl from concentrated HCl.
500 mL of 0.1 M NaOH from concentrated NaOH.
 Calculate the amount of 0.1 M NaOH that would be
required to neutralize 35 mL of 0.1 M HCl.
Titration Apparatus
• Fill a 50.0 mL buret with about
45 mL of 0.1 M NaOH and cover
the top with a small beaker.
• Fill a second buret with about
20.0 mL of 0.1 M HCl.
Use a double buret clamp if
available so that a back titration
is easily performed as needed.
Titration of HCl with NaOH
 Add about 25 mL of 0.1 M HCl into a conical flask and
add two drops of phenolphthalein.
 Titrate the HCl sample with NaOH until the solution is
definitely pink.
 Back Titration:
 Add HCl from the buret dropwise to discharge the color
(back titration).
Carefully add base until the solution acquires a faint pink
hue that persists for at least 30 seconds
Record & Report the Results
 Record the volume of NaOH required to neutralize the
HCl.
 Repeat the titration two-three more times to obtain high
precision.
 Determine the mean Acid/base ratio & standard
deviation.
 Report 95% confidence interval (CI) and the coefficient of
variation (CV).
 Do not discard your 0.1M HCl and NaOH solutions. You
will need them for the next experiment.
